Position Overview

This position offers a broad range of responsibilities and will work alongside senior management. The Operations Manager is a management position that plays a critical role within project management and all construction/ asphalt operational projects. The preferred candidate is experienced in highway construction with asphalt and concrete.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a safe working culture for all employees; work with safety and field personnel to minimize risk and always increase safety for employees.
  • Serve as project manager for construction crews; establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards within corporate policy.
  • Initiate and maintain liaison with the prime client and subcontractors to facilitate construction activities.
  • Monitor/control construction through administrative direction of the superintendants to ensure project is built on schedule and within budget; investigate potentially serious situations and implement corrective measures.
  • Recognize and negotiate change orders.
  • Develop and maintain the backlog for operations.
  • Develop teamwork and foster team spirit within the respective area of authority.
  • Develop an environment that encourages quality product and service to the customer.
  • Supervise construction teams and develop personnel to excel in their positions.
  • Assist in the job bidding process when necessary; provide sound advice and support during process.
  • Ensure that construction crews have the tools and training to always operate safely and that all federal, state and local laws concerning safety, environment and other applicable areas are adhered to.
  • Interface with the maintenance department to prioritize repairs and assure proper maintenance of equipment by field personnel.
  • Interface with vendors/subcontractors/owners as needed.
  • Manage financial aspects of contracts (fee payment, rental equipment, income/expenses, etc.) to protect the company's interest and simultaneously maintain good relationships with clients/customers.
  • Recommend and adhere to the operating budget for the fiscal year under the direction of the VP/GM.
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, and disciplining employees.
  • Recommend and assist with efforts to improve the management of construction crews and financial performance.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.


Qualifications

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management or related field or equivalent in training and experience.
  • Valid state driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Proven experience of increasing responsibilities within highway construction or similar duties within the industry.


Work Requirements
  • Must be able to use computers, office machines, etc for data entry and internal/external network systems for e-mail communication.
  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Safety Glasses.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.


Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Demonstrated success in managing employees and/or leading a crew.
  • Some experience creating, working within and/or administering an assigned budget.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of ethics, integrity, and trust.
  • Strong work ethic and high standards for safety in the workplace.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships and to work with teams as both a leader and a participant.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills; building rapport, listening, presenting, giving and receiving feedback.
  • Ability to prepare and/or understand annual budget and make presentations to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in English.


Physical Requirements

  • Able to use hands and fingers to manipulate objects, talk and hear.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb, crawl, kneel, and bend.


Work Environment
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.
