Job DescriptionAECOM is seeking a highly skilled
Construction Engineer to support the SR 400 Express Lanes Owner Verification (OV) team-one of the most complex and high-profile infrastructure projects in the United States. This transformative $4.6 billion initiative will add two express lanes in each direction along a 16-mile corridor while delivering over 25 bridges and four Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations under GDOT's first Public-Private Partnership (P3) concession.
As part of a collocated team under the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Construction Engineer serves as a key technical representative of the Owner, providing engineering oversight, construction verification, and coordination with the Developer and Independent Quality Firm (IQF). This role combines field engineering, technical analysis, and construction oversight to ensure compliance with project design, contractual obligations, and quality standards.
Under limited supervision, this role requires
independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and implementationof standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. The Construction Engineer is fully competent in most aspects of the role and will work on
projects of substantial complexity, exercising sound engineering judgment in dynamic field environments. This individual may also assume
lead responsibilities, guiding junior engineers, inspectors, and technical staff to ensure consistent execution and quality delivery.
Reporting to the Construction OV Manager, this position plays a critical role in successful project delivery through leadership, technical expertise, and proactive problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities- Provide engineering oversight and technical verification of roadway and bridge construction activities to ensure alignment with design plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Conduct independent field evaluations and engineering assessments, identifying deficiencies and determining appropriate corrective actions.
- Apply and adapt standard engineering methods and practices to address complex field conditions and construction challenges.
- Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, geotechnical data, and structural reports (including BFI, pile driving logs, and drilled shaft reports).
- Serve as a technical liaison between GDOT (Owner), the Developer, and the Independent Quality Firm (IQF) to resolve engineering and construction issues.
- Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with engineering standards, approved methods, materials specifications, and safety requirements.
- Evaluate and verify materials sampling, testing, and QA/QC data in accordance with the Construction Quality Assurance Program (CQAP).
- Lead or support the engineering review of non-conformance reports, remediation plans, and corrective actions to ensure proper resolution.
- Participate in pre-construction and pre-activity meetings, evaluating technical input and engineering guidance.
- Analyze construction progress, productivity, and quality trends, making data-driven recommendations for improvement.
- Ensure all QA/QC documentation and material certifications meet requirements for final project acceptance.
- Maintain complete and accurate engineering records, reports, and project documentation in support of contract administration.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, inspectors, and technicians, ensuring adherence to best practices.
- May lead small teams or specific workstreams, coordinating engineering and inspection activities across disciplines.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, ensuring engineering decisions align with safe construction practices.
QualificationsMinimum:- BA/BS and 6 years of progressive experience in roadway and bridge construction inspection, engineering support, or related experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- Valid US Driver's License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review
Preferred:- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Management.
- Experience working on large-scale transportation infrastructure projects, particularly roadway and bridge construction.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Engineering design standards and construction specifications
- Construction methods, materials, and equipment
- Structural and geotechnical construction practices
- Proven ability to independently evaluate complex situations and apply engineering judgment in field conditions.
- Proficiency in engineering mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry) for field problem-solving and analysis.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting complex construction and inspection documentation.
- Demonstrated leadership experience or ability to guide teams and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts.
- Experience and commitment to safety, quality assurance, and continuous improvement in construction environments.
Posted salary range suggestion: $95,000 to $120,000
Additional Information- Work performed in active and potentially hazardous construction environments, including traffic, heights, water proximity, and adverse weather.
- Position requires availability for night, weekend, and holiday work based on construction schedules.
- Relocation is not available for this position.
