The Opportunity:

As a Commercial Underwriter, Member & Co-operative Business you will assess and evaluate new business, renewals, and endorsements to determine risk and provide appropriate coverage solutions. Leveraging your analytical and problem-solving skills, you will manage complex specialty accounts while ensuring decisions align with underwriting guidelines and authority levels.

How you will create impact:

  • Contributing to the profitable growth of a portfolio through underwriting expertise, service excellence, new business acquisition, renewal retention and endorsement activity, with accountability aligned to role level and authority, and in support of our target appetite and growth objectives.
  • Develop and maintain new relationships with partners by marketing Sovereign's unique value proposition and capitalizing on opportunities for viable insurance solution expansion. This includes attending client meetings, delivering presentations or workshops, attending events, as well as and engaging and connecting relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Applying established procedures, underwriting guidelines, tools and authority levels to support consistent and sound underwriting decisions.
  • Analyzing new business, renewals and endorsements to assess risk and determine appropriate underwriting action.
  • Leveraging internal tools, resources and expertise to evaluate loss exposure, including the likelihood and potential severity of a loss.
  • Developing competitive quotes and negotiating coverage and rates, as applicable, to deliver creative solutions that balance customer needs with business objectives.
  • Providing advice and guidance to less experienced underwriting staff on underwriting authority, including required approvals and escalation.
  • Ensuring customer service standards are consistently achieved through timely, responsive and professional support.

  • You have 3 years of experience in insurance, with a focus on commercial underwriting preferred
  • You have experience coaching, mentoring, and supporting various stakeholders.
  • Having the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designations is an asset.
  • You have advanced knowledge of underwriting practices, insurance products and competitor landscape.

Salary information

"Expected salary/hourly range $60,574 - $100,956" (min-max, full range)

Salary placement

"The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Sovereign in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education."

Incentive/Variable pay

"Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn additional compensation tied to individual and/or business performance, or other business metrics."
