Full Job Description
About the position

Altruist is in the midst of an exceptional growth phase and we're excited to hire a high performing Cloud Engineering Manager to lead our Cloud Infrastructure & Platform team. In this role, you will lead the engineers who build Infrastructure as a Service for every product team at Altruist - infrastructure that is highly available, secure, and observable, with self-service paths that let developers move without waiting on us. You will collaborate closely with engineering leadership, Platform, SRE, Security, and Data Platform to eliminate operational bottlenecks and keep our broker-dealer and clearing systems reliable. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will set the roadmap, run 1:1s, and make hiring decisions, and you will also review Terraform, sit in incident reviews, and make the architectural calls that shape our AWS footprint for the next three years.

This role follows a hybrid schedule, with three days per week onsite in our San Francisco FiDi or Culver City office.

Your impact
  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of cloud, DevOps, and database reliability engineers across local and offshore locations - 1:1s, growth paths, performance, and hiring.
  • Own delivery of the Cloud Engineering roadmap: governed EKS platform in Broker-Dealer and Clearing, pilot-light disaster recovery (RTO 60 60 min / RPO 60 15 min), Postgres upgrades, and edge gateway consolidation.
  • Drive software supply chain security and SDLC hygiene - SBOMs, signed provenance, hardened golden images, and policy-as-code admission control - in partnership with Security Engineering.
  • Own the Cloud on-call rotation and incident response process: SLAs, runbooks, blameless post-mortems, and follow-through on action items.
  • Improve developer experience through ephemeral environments, faster pipelines, and self-service infrastructure - measured in DORA metrics, not opinions.
  • Manage cloud and observability spend with a cost-per-service view, making trade-offs explicit to Finance and to engineering leadership.
  • Represent Cloud Engineering in audits and regulatory reviews with evidence that is automated rather than assembled by hand.
  • Mentor and guide engineers on secure infrastructure practices so systems are both performant and resilient against security vulnerabilities.

What you'll bring
  • Experience - 6+ years in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE, including 2+ years managing engineers at a B2B financial services, fintech, or SaaS organization
    • Deep AWS expertise across networking, IAM, compute, storage, and cost management at production scale
    • Strong Kubernetes (EKS) and Infrastructure as Code experience - Terraform, Helm, and GitOps delivery with ArgoCD
    • Practiced CI/CD ownership: GitLab pipelines, artifact and secrets management (Vault), and release safety
  • Operational credibility - you have run a production on-call rotation and can act as a senior escalation point, not just route the page to someone else
  • Observability fluency with Open Telemetry, SLOs, and error budgets used to make real decisions
  • People leadership - a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining engineers, including remote and offshore team members
  • Education - Ideally looking for a B.A. / B.S. degree in relevant fields such as Computer Science or Software Engineering, but experience and understanding are just as important
  • Technical aptitude - You're technologically savvy and can easily get up to speed on modern tech stacks (i.e. Kubernetes, Kafka, Temporal, Postgres, and Snowflake)
  • Ownership - The pride you put into every aspect of your work is unparalleled and undeniable
  • Superb communication - Intentional dialogue is a superpower. You listen as well as you share your perspective with others.
  • Resilience - We're inspired by your unwavering determination to achieve success, no matter the adversity you face along the way.
  • Assurance - Your confidence is brilliant, yet ego-less. You possess a strong knowledge base, the ability to discover the unknown, and are open to differing perspectives.
  • Creative problem solving - Identifying the problem is simply not enough. You're instinctually creative with your approach in finding solutions to roadblocks.

Bonus points if you bring
  • Expertise with AI (Claude) best practices, and experience rolling AI-assisted workflows out to an engineering team
  • Experience operating in a regulated environment - SOC 1 / SOC 2, FINRA or SEC examinations, and evidence automation
  • Hands-on experience with Kong, Envoy, or Gateway API at the edge
  • Postgres operations depth: upgrades, replication, change data capture, and performance tuning
  • Familiarity with Teleport, Vault, Karpenter, and policy engines such as OPA Gatekeeper or Kyverno
  • Experience running tabletop exercises and disaster recovery GameDays
  • Knowledge of brokerage platforms and the financial services industry
