JOB SUMMARYClinical Pharmacy Specialist, Psychiatry We are seeking applicants for a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist position for Inpatient Psychiatry at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital at UT Southwestern Medical Center. This position is part of the pharmacy department and functions as the pharmacy expert on the interdisciplinary Inpatient Psychiatry team. The Psychiatry Specialist serves as a leader for the department in their specialty area of practice through organizing and executing appropriate departmental initiatives, assisting with quality initiatives and practice development in psychiatry, and providing education and teaching for pharmacy colleagues, providers, patients, and trainees at all levels of practice. Day-to-day activities include rounding on the Inpatient Psychiatry service; evaluating, monitoring, and modifying drug therapy to optimize patient outcomes and safety; and precepting pharmacy residents and/or students.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONRequired- Education
Both PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program
PGY1 with 5 years of progressive clinical practice experience
Bachelor's Degree of Science degree or PharmD from ACPE accredited school of pharmacy or
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy
- Experience
5 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty with PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program or
8 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty.
Computer skills, data entry experience
English (speaking, reading, writing). Good general health and stress coping ability. Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.
- Licenses and Certifications
Eligible for licensure by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) Upon Hire and
Texas license with TSBP within 30 Days and
(BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Upon Hire and
(ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heat Association (AHA), or American Red Cross (ARC) required for only inpatient positions prior to or within 6 months of employment. Upon Hire
JOB DUTIES- Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards. Develops/implements process to meet/comply with JCAHO and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification and continued education specific to specialty. Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessment and pharmacokinetic calculations. Identifies opportunities for process improvements, develops and implements policy and procedures for prompt, safe and efficient patient care.
- Actively promotes pharmacy. Coordinates and participates in multidisciplinary in-services/meetings, publishes articles (i.e. staff newsletter), individualized drug information, rounds, consults, etc. Maintains high visibility/availability through participation in in-services, meetings and daily activities. Participates in the education/experiential training of pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.
- Actively manage P&T initiatives through monitoring of documented interventions. Verifies data, develops measures and reports outcomes (Performance Improvement). Supports cost savings initiatives. Has active role in assessment and selection of cost-effective pharmaceuticals. Reviews formulary addition request and develops monographs for presentation. Manage the formulary system and procedures for acquisition of non-formulary product.
- Consistently works and problem solves independently and effectively. Takes charge when necessary and is looked to for direction. Makes the right decisions and uses good judgment. Cross trained and multifunctional maintaining competency in multiple areas.
- Mentors clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel. Delegates appropriate/reasonable tasks and evaluates performance. Represents Pharmacy Department at P&T Committee and Service Line Meetings.
- Performs computer order entry in an accurate, thorough and timely manner. Reviews/updates medication profiles (therapies, allergies, height, weight, etc.) and is cognizant of patient charges. Reviews medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, duplications, interactions, overall effectiveness and safety. Seeks clarification if necessary and documents interventions (i.e., ADRs).
- Actively enhances personal growth and development by participating in educational programs, literature searches, in-services and meetings. Actively participates in new employee orientation and training and evaluations.
- Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
