General Summary:Under minimal supervision, is responsible for the vision, direction and coordination of the functions, workflow and processes related to the Pharmacy Information Systems to promote an integrated program of comprehensive and cost-efficient pharmaceutical care for Bayhealth patients through the use, development and maintenance of automation and technology. Ensures Pharmacy Information Systems are compliant with all state and federal regulations, as well as with the policies of Bayhealth. Coordinates and validates clinical data from the various Pharmacy Informatics Systems, evaluates and implements new systems/technology, and maintains the current systems. Functions as the primary informatics liaison between the Pharmacy department and clinical, IS and business units.
Responsibilities:1. Monitor and support all Pharmacy Information Systems to enhance information management and automation of the department (includes, but is not limited to, database maintenance, data reporting and report writing.)
2. Ensure the integrity and security of the Epic system for the pharmacy end users by diagnosing and trouble-shooting problems, issues and concerns, and developing solutions to these problems. In partnership with the Willow/Beacon/QS1 teams/IS department, work to implement these solutions. Communicate the resolution with end users and pharmacy leadership.
3. Collaborate across department lines and with vendors to successfully integrate/interface outside software and computer systems with the Pharmacy Information Systems.
4. Provide direction and support, establish goals, objectives and continuing education for the Pharmacy Automation Technicians.
5. Provide on-going technical support and training to Pharmacy, Nursing and other pharmacy automation end users as needed. Review and approve all enhancements to the Willow, Beacon and QS1 applications. Educate end users on any changes to workflow or functionality. Identify training needs and produce appropriate educational materials or programs and ensure ongoing competencies at required proficiency levels.
6. . Coordinate, plan and oversee upgrades to current Pharmacy operating systems, and evaluate next generation technology to meet department needs for the future state of pharmacy automation. Provide leadership and direction in the planning, evaluation and implementation of pharmaceutical technologies to promote safe medication use, such as the generation/validation of custom barcodes for medication scanning and product mapping between Epic and the automated dispensing cabinet software. Create and utilize testing scenarios before implementing new software, upgrades or systems. Test and validate retrieval of archived data from systems or software no longer used or supported by Bayhealth or the vendor.
7. Oversight and management of the automated distribution cabinets and storage/dispensing units (currently, AcuDose and MedCarousel), including their formularies, reporting and optimization. Maintain and update the smart pump infusion libraries.
8. Develop and fine-tune the pharmacy department's procedures for Downtime events; create a training lesson and ensure documentation of annual competency by all end users.
9. Oversee project management for informatics activities supporting pharmacy projects and initiatives if technology, system design or reporting needs are required. This encompasses the entire project life cycle, i.e. evaluation, development, implementation, training and maintenance phases. Apply pharmacy informatics practice expertise to produce standards, workflows and processes aligned with the needs and requirements of Bayhealth.
10. Extract and report clinical and statistical data to appropriate department management and staff (i.e. turnaround times, readmissions, MUEs, controlled drug utilization.)
11. Assist in the training of the PGY1 Pharmacy Resident during their Leadership Rotation; create and offer an Informatics elective rotation for the residency program.
12. Facilitate the change management process including revising workflows and standardizing processes to successfully implement automated systems. Analyze departmental change requests to determine impact and functionality feasibility.
13. Participate in interdisciplinary and process improvement teams, meetings, work groups and committees as the pharmacy department representative. Consult with, and serve as a liaison between the pharmacy and other units or appropriate committees for the purpose of ensuring coordination in planning, developing and implementing automation and informatics programs, and the resolution of operational and clinical service issues related to technology.
14. All other duties as assigned, within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:- Education: Bachelor Degree Pharmacy or Advanced degree (MSHI or MIS)
- Credential(s): Licensed Pharmacist
- Experience: Required: 3 years hospital pharmacy experience to include experience with clinical information systems (interface design/testing, training, EHR implementation, project management, etc.)
Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience:- Credential(s): Project Management Professional, Six Sigma Lean Black Belt Certified or Six Sigma Lean Green Belt Certified
- Experience: Preferred: Five years as a member of Pharmacy leadership or management
