We are seeking an R&D Systems Engineer to work on the following responsibilities for the Nuclear Deterrence Program Management Office.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Report: Coordinate the periodic reporting from the many stockpile programs to support internal and NNSA management processes. You will work closely with program staff to aggregate reports and filter them for relevance to the intended audience. Your ability to recognize common themes of accomplishments, risks, and issues will enable you to generate clear and concise summary reporting for the stockpile portfolio. You will also identify opportunities to leverage existing information to meet multiple reporting requirements efficiently and collaborate with NNSA and line organizations to optimize reporting processes for managing our Nuclear Deterrence work.


  • Communicate: Maintain a strong network of contacts across all stockpile programs to facilitate the flow of information. You will communicate the news and strategic direction to these programs, helping line organizations clearly and concisely articulate their status and needs for assistance. Serving as a key point of contact for our NNSA customers and other NNSA sites, you will work across programs to respond accurately and promptly to customer requests, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.


  • Integrate: Partner with line organizations to validate and improve their assessment of risks and issues, while identifying opportunities for programs to enhance efficiency and quality through collaboration. You will build customer trust by helping organizations meet their commitments and communicate transparently about their plans, needs, and status. By challenging programs on the accuracy of their project management, you will propose solutions to improve efficacy and efficiency. Additionally, you will identify options to resolve issues and assist line organizations in securing the resources they need. Supporting the ND program, you will help establish strategic priorities and manage execution toward those goals, translating technical requirements into clear justifications for program cost and schedule.


Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development. ¿

Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

About Our Team

The Stockpile Systems and Production Program Office is accountable for the programmatic management of SNL's Stockpile Operations work and mission elements. Stockpile Systems and Production is the SNL programmatic agent representative responsible to NNSA for these mission elements, which include the following: Stockpile Systems and Operations, Weapons Dismantlement & Disposition (WDD), Stockpile Services, and Multi-Weapons Systems (MWS). The office reports to the Director for Nuclear Deterrence Program Management and the Chief Engineer for Nuclear Weapons (CENW). The Stockpile Systems and Production program office is staffed by Business Professionals and Research and Development (R&D) technical engineering staff as an integrated element of the ND Portfolio Management Office (PMO). Stockpile operations includes: surveillance, aircraft compatibility, Tonopah Test Range (TTR), NW training, Gas Transfer Systems (GTS), weapon response, PRIDE, military liaison, H-gear, use control, legacy component engineers, materials science, etc. The strategic direction of the portfolio is to manage all of the elements in a balanced and strategic way as they each take on additional risk in the coming years for the current stockpile while simultaneously preparing for the modernization programs with limited budget profiles.
