What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Team Lead for Active Ceramics Manufacturing, Org 075681. The Team Lead will oversee highly rigorous operations, utilize state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions, and join a dynamic team that tests and delivers high quality and reliable assets in support of the viability of our nuclear weapons stockpile. You will be assigned to a specific department based on the needs of the mission.

On any given day, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Be responsible for managing the personnel who conduct the daily operations of MQ, design, Science & Technology (S&T) and development manufacturing activities to meet NG Integrated Program Plan (NIPP) deliverables.
  • Engage design, product, and process engineers to evolve manufacturing techniques, equipment, and processes to improve yields, resolve production issues, and design/incorporate modern processes and technologies onto the floor
  • Team with S&T/Design organizations on problem solving efforts; and in conceiving, planning, modeling, and/or conducting experimental work to build new product and process understandings/capabilities.
  • Serve as the temporary (or back-up) for product/process engineers.
  • Oversee (or participating in) the application of engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop, or demonstrate new designs, machines, products, processes, or systems.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$138,600 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • An active DOE Q clearance, or equivalent is required to start

  • Ability to successfully manage and complete multiple programs and projects
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, understand, and articulate constraints as well as lead teams through a process to identify options and paths-forward
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Nuclear weapons experience
  • Prior leadership experience
  • The ability to understand the work done in the Neutron Generator Enterprise (in general) and in the assigned work area (in particular) to judge quality, assess issues, and, when needed put forth technical (or engineered) solutions to improve performance.
  • Prior experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic production environment
  • Experience with product realization processes and process development
  • Ability to successfully manage and complete multiple programs and projects
  • Willingness to actively participate in Lean Six Sigma program and achieve Green Belt certification in one year
  • A commitment to a culture of safety and security
  • Strong analytical skills


About Our Team

The Active Ceramics Value Stream at Sandia National Laboratories provides active ceramic elements for the Nuclear Security Enterprise with demonstrated value, performance, and confidence that meet customer delivery schedules. Also, the department provides a broad range of options for fabricating and machining ceramic components. Our capabilities range from chemical synthesis of powders, powder processing, billet formation and machining, component assembly, fabrication and testing. We strive to achieve agility and value-added processes through the continuous utilization of Lean/Six Sigma methodology.
