Full Job Description

The Lawyers Indemnity Fund (LIF) is seeking a permanent, full-time Claims Counsel. LIF is the Law Society of BC department that administers the indemnification program, protecting both BC licensees and the public they serve. Claims Counsel are responsible for the management and cost-effective resolution of claims and potential claims under three Law Society programs: professional liability indemnification for lawyers, trust protection coverage for the benefit of the public, and trust shortage indemnification for lawyers (resulting from funds transfer fraud). Claims Counsel efficiently manage an assigned caseload spanning various areas of law, with claims ranging from modest amounts up to and in excess of the $1 million indemnity limit. Claims Counsel also provide advance rulings binding on LIF and the Law Society, give risk management advice, and prepare and deliver presentations and written material to licensees and law firms. The nature of the work requires advanced advocacy and counsel skills to effectively resolve a broad variety of complex matters, and the exercise of significant judgment in unique circumstances. Claims Counsel exercise discretion to settle or defend individual claims and, after a year of service, have authority to settle up to $100,000. The duties of the position include: - Investigating professional negligence and theft claims against lawyers - Determining the applicability of indemnity coverage - Managing the defence of actions by outside counsel, with the opportunity to act as defence counsel in some actions - Developing and implementing strategies to effectively resolve claims and negotiating settlements - Participating in loss prevention activities and providing information to covered lawyers on practice and risk issues - Such other duties as LIF's Chief Operating Officer or a Director of Claims may require Qualifications - Must have Juris Doctor (J.D.) or LLB and be a member in good standing of the Law Society of BC. An excellent reputation in the legal community is essential. - Minimum of five years of experience, preferably in a litigation or solicitor practice. - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong analytical abilities, superior advocacy and sound judgment. - Superior writing skills and work effectively in stressful situations. - Preference will be given to candidates who have experience or working knowledge in some or all of the areas of commercial and real estate transactions, insolvency, securities, and wills and estates. The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position. The salary range for this position is $145,326.22 to $176,101.67. The closing date for this competition is September 24, 2026.
