Civil Engineer, Mining

In this role, as a Civil Engineer, Mining, you will be a part of the Mining team, based in either St. Johns, NL, Brampton, Sudbury, or North Bay, ON, offices.

What a day at EXP has in store for you
  • Complete engineering calculations and models for assessments, including: seepage and stability, pipe and drainage ditch design, hydrology and hydraulics plans, erosion, settling of solids, alternative cover demonstrations, geochemistry, and statistics.
  • Assist the Director of Engineering, civil Engineer and EITs with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost and schedule.
  • Prepare technical specifications based on input received from other disciplines.
  • Plan and execute field exploration programs focused on gathering data to support site investigation and design activities. The work may involve soil boring and test pit logging, well installation, development, and sampling.
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates.
  • Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists.
  • Perform Project Management tasks for capital and maintenance projects.
  • Perform and document construction observation and construction quality assurance testing for Geosynthetics or Earthworks on large civil or power projects.
  • Prepare interpretive reports to support the development of engineering design and construction documents.
  • Develop grading plans and designs in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Assist with writing reports, cost estimating, specifications, and permit documents with senior technical advice and review.


What your experience looks like
  • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) within the province is mandatory
  • A minimum 5 years' experience in civil engineering design within mining, or industrial projects of varying stages from conceptual to detailed design
  • Solid experience in site development, and pipe and open channel hydraulics, Mine access road design
  • Tailings / slurry piping design experience is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of various piping materials, fittings and joining methods
  • Experience in storm water management, stormwater runoff calculations, sizing the ditches, culverts and ponds
  • Good understanding of various coordinate systems and survey controls
  • Experience in interpreting and applying geotechnical design recommendations on civil designs
  • Experience in writing technical reports, specifications and in preparing the material take-offs for Cost Estimates
  • Experience in procurement, technical evaluations of construction contracts and material / equipment supply contracts
  • Excellent organizational, technical, communication and computer skills
  • Knowledge of general civil designs and an understanding of industry codes, Mining Laws and Regulations, standards and construction methods
