The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Internal Medicine, invites nominations and applications for the position of Division Chief of Nephrology. This position represents a major leadership appointment in the Department and one of the premier positions in Nephrology in the country.
The Nephrology Division has a rich tradition at UT Southwestern since the 1960s, with graduates and former faculty members populating the leadership of major academic medical centers in this country and across the world. Prior division chiefs have been Donald Seldin, Floyd Rector, Juha Kokko, Robert Alpern, Peter Igarashi, and Orson Moe. The current faculty of the division includes junior, mid-career, and senior members with a diverse mix of clinical, translational, basic science, and educational interests. They are also active in many of the basic and clinical science centers at UT Southwestern, creating a rich collaborative and intellectual environment in the division.
The faculty and fellows manage the nephrology services at four hospitals (Parkland Memorial Hospital, Clements University Hospital, Zale-Lipshy Hospital, and the Dallas VA Medical Center) with distinct populations and patterns of disease that provide a rich source of clinical material for research and education. Our kidney transplant program has been growing steadily due to active outreach efforts.
Basic and clinical research themes in the division include polycystic kidney disease, renal development, physiology, mineral metabolism, nephrolithiasis, metabolic bone diseases, glomerular disease, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, renal cell biology, dialysis outcomes, and health informatics related to renal disease outcomes. The faculty lead and interact with the UT Southwestern O'Brien Kidney Center, the UT Southwestern CTRC, and the Centers for Human Genetics, Regenerative Medicine, Human Nutrition, Mineral Metabolism, and the Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation, along with multiple basic science departments (Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, and Physiology). There is also enormous potential for new and enhanced collaborative clinical, translational, and basic science research.
The nephrology fellowship program provides training in clinical nephrology, and clinical and basic sciences. The T32 Training Grant is now in its 38 year with 100% of graduating trainees in the past 5 years entering academic investigative careers.

Qualification
Candidates must have a distinguished record and national reputation in scholarly achievement including research, a commitment to graduate medical education, and proven management and leadership skills in clinical practice in nephrology. A demonstrated ability to maintain an externally funded research program is a prerequisite. Candidates are expected to contribute to the teaching and training of medical and graduate students, housestaff, and fellows.
Applicants must be board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and be eligible for Texas medical licensure. The Chief of Nephrology will be expected to oversee existing and develop new programs in the areas of clinical research, basic research, patient care, and medical education.
