Summary

This position is located in the DEA, Office of Forensic Sciences (SF), Arlington, VA .

This position(s) primary purpose is to serves as the Senior Forensic Advisor to the Assistant Administrator (or equivalent executive level position) and provides technical advice, expert opinions, guidance and recommendations pertaining to forensic science and the operation and management of DEA's multi-disciplinary laboratory system.

As a your typical work assignments may include:

  • Serves as the primary scientific and technical advisor to SF senior executive leadership, providing authoritative direction, technical expertise, oversight and management to facilitate the implementation of requirements and major projects related to DEA's forensic sciences operations.
  • Performs special functions, research, studies, and analyses having major impact on DEA, the laboratory system, and the global forensic community.
  • Performs a variety of staff studies to obtain in-depth information necessary to formulate an analysis of the technical, regulatory, and administrative interrelationships so as to improve laboratory operations and services throughout the agency.
  • Develops, establishes, and provides scientific and technical policy guidance to committees and technical experts both internal and external to DEA.

Basic Qualification Requirements:
Applicants must meet ONE of the following qualification requirements: (A). Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR (B). Combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicants applying for the GS-15 must meet the following requirements:

A. Have at least one full year of specialized experience that is at least equivalent to work performed at the GS-14 grade level. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 Federal grade level in applying expert-level application of drug analysis policies and advanced chemistry principles to interpret complex scientific data, identify trends, and track precursor chemicals across investigative datasets. Leading evaluation and modernization of laboratory operations, recommending and implementing solutions for automation, analytics, and workflow management to enhance efficiencies and data integrity and mission effectiveness.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet time-in-grade and time after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
