Capital Management Associate

This role involves building and refining investment cases and related financial models to support high-impact decisions and advance the company's and client's growth, commercialization, and decarbonization objectives.

This role is ideal for "hybrids," meaning candidates with both technical and finance backgrounds, or technical candidates with newly acquired business/finance degrees.

Responsibilities
  1. Build, maintain, and refine financial models for technologies, projects, and strategic initiatives. Develop scenarios and sensitivities to inform decision-making by project leads and executive leadership. Serve as an owner of financial models for specific technologies or projects, while contributing to corporate-level forward-looking pro forma analyses. Partner cross-functionally to refine assumptions and incorporate strategic, commercial, and technical inputs into model outputs.
  2. Support strategic transactions and capital formation efforts by preparing presentations and analyses that communicate the pro forma economics of technologies, projects, and corporate initiatives. Contribute to investor and partner materials at the project, technology, and corporate levels. Play a lead working-level role in diligence processes for prospective investors and transaction counterparties. Partner with Business Development to support origination efforts, proposal development, and evaluation of a range of transaction structures. Develop quantitative and qualitative analyses to assess investment alternatives for 8 Rivers' technologies and projects.
  3. Engage with potential clients, investors, and strategic partners through outreach, analysis, and relationship management. Help build and maintain external relationships that support current and future commercial and financing opportunities.
  4. Conduct market and economic research on commodity markets, equipment trends, policy developments, and government incentives to validate key model assumptions and inform scenario and sensitivity analysis. Translate external market insights into actionable recommendations that support investment and project development decisions.
  5. Support Finance team in the budgeting and forecasting process by helping ensure that forward-looking financial plans align with near-term execution priorities, and in tracking and reporting project performance, including analysis of key financial drivers and forward-looking considerations.


Required Qualifications
  • Approximately 5+ years of relevant experience in financial analysis, capital management, corporate finance, project finance, investment analysis, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Engineering, or a related discipline. A strong quantitative foundation is essential. Hybrid backgrounds including both finance and technical are great fits.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong financial modeling capabilities; familiarity with other analytical tools is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret, synthesize, and communicate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and sound judgment in financial analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to influence, align, and build credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience taking initiatives or projects from inception to launch.
  • Ability to learn quickly and gaining expertise in unfamiliar topics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively in client- and investor-facing settings.
  • Ability to work full-time from our Durham office, five days per week.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the energy sector, preferably in power generation, energy infrastructure, project development, or related markets.
  • Experience with origination, investor or client relationship management, and transaction structuring or strategy.
  • Familiarity with energy-market policy, regulatory frameworks, and industry-specific commercial considerations.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, or business administration (MBA) is a plus. Hybrid backgrounds including both finance and technical are great fits.
  • Professional certifications are a plus (e.g., CFA, FRM).
  • Experience with financial software and databases, e.g., Bloomberg.
