Pay Rate:

$180,000 - $220,000

Multiple factors, including Individual experience, skills and abilities will determine where an employee is ultimately placed in the pay range.

Variable pay may provide additional opportunities for financial awards. This job is eligible to participate in IP's short -term incentive plan.

The Job You Will Perform:

The Power & Chemical Business Unit Manager (BUM) is a lead team role reporting to the Mill Operations Manager. This position provides overall leadership, direction, and accountability for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the mill's Power & Chemical assets and processes.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring excellence in safety, environmental compliance, operational reliability, and asset management.
  • Leading operations for the Power and Recovery Boilers, Turbine Generators, Utilities, Evaporators, Caustic Plant, Tall Oil Plant, Intake Water, and Wastewater Treatment systems.
  • Managing operating, repair, and capital budgets while leading annual outages, capital planning, project execution, long-term asset preservation initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Driving and sustaining reliability programs, equipment care systems, operator training, and workforce development.
  • Collaborating with Technical, Maintenance, Engineering, and Technology teams to optimize business unit performance and ensure compliance with corporate standards.
  • Building and developing a high-performing organization through effective leadership, talent development, and resource planning.


The Power & Chemical BUM directly leads the Power & Chemical leadership team, including Area Process Managers (APMs), First Line Leaders (FLLs), and Technical Assistants (TAs)/Operations Maintenance Coordinators (OMCs), with support from Maintenance, Engineering, and Technical personnel.

This role is ultimately accountable for safety leadership, environmental stewardship, operational excellence, employee development, and achieving business unit performance objectives.

The Skills You Will Bring:

  • Eight to twelve (8-12) years of experience in a Pulp and Paper mill with at least five (5) years of management experience is required.


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or other related field is required.

It is preferred that the Power & Chemical BUM role be filled by an individual with a strong manufacturing management background and a track record of achieving consistent, significant results through systems and teams. The individual should have some knowledge of the core Steam and power systems through previous career experiences working either in maintenance or in operational roles that required heavy industrial exposure.

  • Work effectively in a manufacturing systems based environment with a strong commitment to reliability and the use of Manufacturing Excellence tools and work systems to ensure sustainability and predictability of results. Systems include but are not limited to operating procedures, trouble-cause-correction documents, key performance indicators, meeting scripts, SAP maintenance plans, etc.
  • Engage team in achieving individual, team, department, mill, and company goals; manage plans to ensure the crew has ownership and feels valued within the organization
  • Execute job responsibilities in a sound business manner
