About the Role

The state of the global economy. The emergence of artificial intelligence. The rapidly changing media and entertainment ecosystems. The New York Times's business desk is on the forefront of some of the biggest issues of our times, serving a general interest audience but also closely watched by many of the influential powerbrokers we cover.

We are seeking a dynamic journalist to lead our business desk - both to uphold its strong foundation and to lead its evolution in a relentlessly shifting news and media environment.

The successful candidate ought to have a strong news metabolism and a record of motivating reporters to break consequential stories and produce competitive coverage, including explanatory, analytical and investigative journalism. You are steeped in business coverage and have an innovative vision for making our report even more essential, from the conception of beats to the use of new storytelling forms. You are an experienced manager who can oversee and coordinate the work of large teams of journalists, while collaborating effectively with departments across a large newsroom.

You will oversee a report expressed across multiple formats: text, video, photo, interactive graphics, and more. And you are attuned to maintaining a healthy culture that fosters teamwork, high morale and professional development for a large global staff.

This position is based in our New York City headquarters. It is a full-time role that includes regular attendance in the office each week. It reports to Carolyn Ryan, managing editor

  • Lead the Business report of The New York Times, including driving competitive news coverage, generating scoops and ambitious enterprise, incorporating visual and other forms into the report, and setting desk goals and overseeing performance
  • Develop and uphold a strong and cohesive workplace culture
  • Collaborate with colleagues on desks across the newsroom
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience as an editor
  • 5+ years in a significant leadership or managerial role within a major media organization
  • Experience assigning stories and directing coverage
  • Track record of producing varied storyforms
  • Strong news judgment
  • Demonstrated exceptional editing skills, with the ability to sharpen complex critiques, elevate prose, and guide writers toward their best work under tight deadlines.
  • Experience successfully navigating complex, matrixed organizational structures.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience managing large teams of reporters and editors
  • An eagerness to coach and support colleagues
  • A collaborative, diplomatic leadership style

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$24,000-$285,000 USD
