Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical building inspections and plans examinations.
  • Enforce building codes and regulations effectively.
  • Supervise and mentor other building inspectors.
  • Assist in the interpretation of building codes and standards.
  • Review plans for compliance with codes and standards.
  • Issue permits and oversee the permit process.
  • Provide guidance during construction to ensure adherence to safety regulations.

Job Summary

Under general direction of the Community Development Director, performs a combination of technical building inspection duties, plans examination, and code enforcement, and supervises inspectors.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is an advanced level decision maker and combination inspector and plans examiner position including building inspection qualifications and duties. The incumbent may supervise building inspectors.

Licensing, Education, & Other Requirements

1. High school diploma or equivalent - required. Associates Degree or 60 or more semester hours from an accredited college, university, or technical school with substantial coursework in construction, general contracting, engineering, architecture, public or business administration, management, leadership, or similar field may be preferred.
2. The following certifications are required and must be maintained in active status without suspension or revocation:
a. ICC Certified Building Official certification within one (1) year of hire
b. Current, valid ICC or other nationally recognized certification in two of the following: commercial building inspection, commercial combination inspection, commercial electrical inspection, combination inspection, commercial mechanical inspection, commercial plumbing inspection, or residential combination inspection - at time of hire.
c. ICC Certified Building Inspector I certification at time of hire
d. ICC Plans Examiner certification within one (1) year of hire
3. Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in management, supervision, or leadership - required.
4. Three or more years of code enforcement experience - required.
5. FEMA Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) may be preferred.
6. Possess and maintain a valid Nevada Driver License appropriate for vehicles and other equipment operated.
7. The ability to pass a criminal background investigation.
8. Military experience applicable to the duties of this position may be preferred.
