What's the role

The Business Opportunity Manager will work closely with the VP products Freight and Freight Leadership Team to identify, evaluate and deliver strategic opportunities that enhance the competitiveness, growth and long-term performance of Shell's freight business. The role provides broad exposure across commercial strategy, portfolio optimisation, business development, market analysis and organisational effectiveness.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of Shell's freight portfolios, market dynamics, commercial exposures and key value drivers

  • Identify and lead strategic initiatives focused on growth opportunities, portfolio optimisation, digitalisation, analytics, operational effectiveness and business transformation.

  • Support the development and execution of medium- and long-term commercial strategies that strengthen Shell's competitive position across freight markets.

  • Evaluate market opportunities, business cases and investment options, providing recommendations to support commercial decision-making.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including customers, commercial counterparties, shipowners, financial institutions and industry participants.

  • Drive cross-business collaboration across Trading & Supply and Downstream businesses to unlock value and improve commercial outcomes.

  • Support portfolio reviews, strategic planning activities and business performance discussions by providing market insight, analysis and recommendations.

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives and help identify opportunities to simplify processes, improve decision quality and enhance business performance.

  • Contribute to the development of organisational capability, leadership effectiveness and long-term business resilience.

What you bring

  • The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.

  • Extensive experience in physical and financial freight trading, chartering and portfolio management within a major energy trading organisation, shipowner or related commodity trading business.

  • Significant experience leading freight trading books, commercial portfolios and multidisciplinary teams, with accountability for commercial performance, risk management and long-term freight commitments.

  • Deep knowledge of freight markets, including market fundamentals, key trade lanes, voyage chartering, time chartering and freight derivatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute freight trading and portfolio strategies, manage freight exposures and risk, and make sound commercial decisions in dynamic market environments.

  • Strong relationships and credibility across the shipping industry, with the ability to engage effectively with shipowners, counterparties and senior external stakeholders.

  • Experience leading organisational change, business improvement and cross-functional initiatives, working effectively across trading, operations, market risk, finance, credit and other business functions.

  • Strong people leadership, communication and influencing skills, with experience developing talent and engaging effectively with senior stakeholders.

What we offer

The base salary range for this position is $252,000 - $378,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives.  For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.  Additional information on Shell’s US benefit programs can be found at https://www.shell.us/careers/about-careers-at-shell/rewards-and-benefits.html.
