The BESS Engineer is the fleet technical subject matter expert for battery energy storage systems. The role provides advanced support for battery systems, BMS, HVAC, fire safety systems, containers, cell, module and rack failures, firmware, and associated operating interfaces.
The position leads complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis using predictive and advanced analytics tools, operating data, event records, test results, inspections and OEM information. The engineer converts findings into practical corrective actions, SOPs, response plans and technical guidance the site and other O&M teams.
The role governs battery warranty and state-of-health analysis, serial-defect monitoring, capacity testing, battery balancing, SOC calibration scheduling and related predictive tools. The engineer promotes fleet learning and coordinates with OEMs, site teams and other specialists to implement sustainable technical improvements.
What you will do
Responsibilities, include, but not limited to:
- Provide fleet technical ownership for battery systems, BMS, HVAC, fire safety systems and containers, cell, module and rack failure topics.
- Lead advanced troubleshooting and RCA using predictive and advanced analytics tools, alarms, trends, event logs, test results and field evidence.
- Develop and maintain SOPs, troubleshooting guides and response plans for recurring or high-risk BESS issues.
- Manage technical evaluation of battery warranty and state-of-health topics and coordinate supporting evidence.
- Define and support capacity testing, battery balancing, SOC calibration scheduling, firmware management and post-change validation.
- Monitor serial defects and systemic failure patterns and recommend risk-based actions.
- Develop or govern related predictive tools and translate insights into field guidance and maintenance improvements.
- Support technical specifications & studies, lifecycle assessments and asset improvement initiatives.
- Support supplier reviews, warranty evidence, specifications and asset improvement projects.
- Contribute technical input to due diligence, commissioning support and new-asset integration.
- Participate in incident response, expert teams and supplier technical reviews.
- Maintain technical records, lessons learned and concise status reporting.
What you will bring
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical , Mechanical, Chemical, Energy or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant field experience, including substantial exposure to utility-scale BESS or battery systems.
- OEM battery/BMS training or recognized battery-safety certification preferred.
- Strong knowledge of BESS architecture, battery systems, BMS, HVAC and fire safety systems
- Strong knowledge of Advanced fault diagnostics and RCA
- Strong knowledge of Battery SOH, warranty evidence, degradation and capacity testing
- Strong knowledge of Firmware, SOC calibration and technical change validation
- Experience in SOPs and technical contingency plan development
