The Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC) within the Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a motivated R&D Engineer to support diagnostics for the LANSCE accelerator. The LANSCE Accelerator's beam instrumentation suite includes, but is not limited to, Beam Position & Phase Monitors (BPPMs), Wirescanners, Emittance Scanners, Energy Degrader/Faraday Cups, and Camera/phosphor systems. The successful applicants' responsibilities will include support of design, modeling, implementation, verification and testing of electrical circuits or FPGAs. They will also be expected to modify, upgrade and maintain existing LANSCE beam diagnostic instrumentation. Additionally, the position will involve evaluating existing legacy control systems, identifying areas for improvement, and contributing to the development of updated architectures that enhance reliability, maintainability, and performance. Responsibilities include supporting system integration efforts, preparing technical documentation, participating in design reviews, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and helping oversee installation, testing, and commissioning activities. The successful candidate must communicate effectively and work independently with a minimum of supervision with the ability to assume responsibility for projects and their success.
The selected individual must be willing to work occasionally at odd hours. The successful candidate will be required to assume 24-hour on-call support of AOT-IC accelerator hardware.
R&D Engineer 1 ($96,600 - $158,000) As an R&D engineer 1 you will support the design, prototype, test, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of beam diagnostic instrumentation systems. You will support documentation activities including system documentation, schematics, and procedures. You will also follow established safety and security requirements.
R&D Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, R&D engineer 2 will be required to independently apply systems engineering principles through the project lifecycle and lead development of projects from conceptual design to closeout. You will be responsible for expanding capabilities and contributing to continuous improvement and modernization efforts for accelerator diagnostics. You will also collaborate with accelerator physicists, operations,
engineers to improve diagnostic performance and system reliability.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Demonstrated knowledge of high-speed data acquisition and real-time systems
- Experience developing, testing, or supporting instrumentation, controls, or experimental systems.
- Demonstrated experience with advanced design & analysis tools, such as schematic capture tools,
- analog or digital simulation tools, and signal integrity analysis tools
- Ability to independently execute technical tasks and contribute to engineering projects
Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and technical experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications: - Familiarity with EPICS, LabVIEW, DSP, FPGA-based systems, or embedded electronics
- Experience with accelerator instrumentation, diagnostics, or similar large-scale scientific systems
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and network analyzers

Work Environment: Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
