Full Job Description
As part of our continued growth and innovation initiatives, we are seeking an Avionics & Mechatronics Engineer to join our team and support the development, integration, and testing of advanced RPAS platforms and avionics systems.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Volatus Aerospace, the Avionics & Mechatronics Engineer plays a critical role in integrating, configuring, and validating the electronic and control systems that power next-generation unmanned aerial systems.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role focused on flight controllers, avionics integration, sensor systems, power management, diagnostics, and embedded system troubleshooting. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering and flight operations teams to ensure aircraft systems are reliable, safe, and mission ready.

We are seeking a builder and problem solver who is comfortable with soldering irons, oscilloscopes, wiring harnesses, flight logs, and real-world system troubleshooting in fast-paced operational environments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assemble and wire complete avionics systems, including ESCs, motors, flight controllers, GPS systems, telemetry modules, RC receivers, and power distribution systems.
  • Configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot flight controllers such as Pixhawk (PX4 / ArduPilot), KK Boards, and Piccolo Autopilot platforms, including sensor calibration, RC mapping, failsafe setup, and pre-arm checks.
  • Tune and optimize power systems by performing motor and propeller matching, current draw profiling, battery selection, and thermal management analysis to ensure reliable aircraft performance.
  • Integrate and validate onboard sensors including GPS, IMUs, barometers, optical flow systems, range finders, and cameras while verifying sensor accuracy and data reliability.
  • Develop integration scripts and utilities using Python or C to support MAVLink tools, parameter automation, and flight log parsing.
  • Diagnose hardware, avionics, and integration issues using flight logs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters in fast-paced testing and operational environments.
  • Strong electronics fundamentals with the ability to read schematics, measure signals, and diagnose system-level issues.
  • Basic programming skills in Python or C with the ability to write scripts, read datasheets, and automate repetitive tasks.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned by the Company from time to time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Hands-on soldering experience working with fine-pitch components, XT connectors, coaxial cables, and heat-sensitive components.
  • Experience configuring at least one flight controller platform from scratch, including Pixhawk, KK Board, or Piccolo systems.
  • Experience with MAVLink, UAVCAN / DroneCAN, and other UAV communication protocols is considered an asset.
  • Basic PCB design experience using tools such as KiCad or EasyEDA is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with power electronics, voltage regulators, current sensing, and BEC systems is preferred.
  • Personal drone builds, robotics competition experience, or electronics hobbyist projects are highly valued.

HOURS OF WORK AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The position is an onsite role, and the Employee is required to perform their duties primarily at the Company's designated workplace, as directed by the Company.
  • The standard work schedule consists of forty (40) hours per week, typically performed Monday to Friday, subject to operational requirements.
  • From time to time, the Employee may be required to maintain reasonable flexibility in working hours to support operational needs, time-sensitive activities, or business priorities.

HOW TO APPLY

If you are ready to take your engineering career to new heights, please apply with your resume and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant experience and interest in the role.
