Lanteris Space Systems is seeking an Avionics Electrical Design Engineer, with a focus on digital electronics and firmware design, to join our Bus Electronics Design team. This is a hands-on, on-site position located in San Jose, CA.

The Bus Electronics team is responsible for the design, verification, and manufacturing support for the electronics that enable our reputable, reliable, high-powered spacecraft. Our spacecraft span pLEO to deep space, enabling national defense, earth observation & communications, and interplanetary space exploration such as NASA’s Psyche Discovery Program and SR-1 Freedom mission to Mars.

In this role, you will act as the engineering focal for one or several avionics units for different Lanteris Space products, with an emphasis in proliferated LEO (pLEO) constellations applications. Collaborating closely with a cohort of electrical, mechanical, test and system engineers, you will develop electrical schematics, firmware code, PCB board layouts, specifications and execute test activities in the laboratory. You will provide technical leadership and provide guidance to other engineers to complete the overall design of the Bus Electronics units. This is an exciting opportunity to be the owner from concept to verification, production and operation of avionics hardware for space applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Subject Matter Expert of one or several avionics units, down to the component and firmware level, with also an understanding of its interfaces to the system level.
  • Provide technical leadership and make recommendations to system trades, requirements capture, and design choices and implications, in an often ambiguous design space.
  • Proactive ownership of hardware through design, production, satellite integration, and on-orbit performance.
  • Design, analyze, and test digital electronics hardware for use in spacecraft applications. Hands-on prototyping and bring up of designs.
  • Documentation of engineering test and qualification plans, execute hardware validation through benchtop and environmental testing, troubleshooting and root cause investigations of anomalous circuit behavior.
  • Develop and manage electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and firmware.
  • Collaborate with entire cross-functional team (mechanical, thermal, software/firmware, test engineering, supply chain, etc.) to drive project success.
  • Support Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM), with customers and internal stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field, with 8 years of experience minimum
  • Proficiency in the design, simulation, analysis, and test of digital electronics circuits, including microprocessors, microcontrollers, FPGA, System on Chip; high speed communication such as SpaceWire, Ethernet, CAN, RS-422/485; and/or firmware development.
  • Proficiency in schematics and circuit board layout considerations for digital and mixed signal electronics, including high speed communications.
  • Experience with analysis methods such as circuit stress, derating, and worst-case analysis
  • Experience writing and reviewing firmware code.
  • Experience collaboratively working to meet the concerns of adjacent disciplines, such as thermal, mechanical, reliability, manufacturing, and test.
  • Hands-on experience with verification & validation (V&V), qualification testing, and troubleshooting at both the hardware and software levels.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • 15 years of relevant experience, including experience leading electrical engineering designs through the full lifecycle.
  • Exposure to Radiation Hardened (Rad Hard) designs; single event effects (SEE) and mitigation analysis / methods.
