Job Title: Automation Engineer

Position Summary:

We are looking for an early career engineer who is interested in automation and manufacturing technology and enjoys solving practical engineering problems. You should be comfortable working hands on with equipment, collaborating with others, and learning new technologies.

As an Automation Engineer, you will support the development, implementation, and improvement of automation and digital manufacturing technologies within our Indianapolis manufacturing operations.

You will work alongside experienced manufacturing, automation, controls, and operations engineers to develop and implement solutions that improve manufacturing capability, safety, quality, cost, delivery, and productivity.

This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience across automation, machine controls, robotics, manufacturing equipment, industrial communications, and digital manufacturing systems. You will be involved throughout the lifecycle of automation projects, from defining requirements and developing solutions through equipment installation, commissioning, validation, and production support.

What you will be doing:
  • Support the development, implementation, validation, and continuous improvement of automated manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Support the definition of automation, controls, and equipment requirements for new and upgraded manufacturing equipment.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of automation projects, including controls, robotics, sensors, machine vision, data collection, and manufacturing systems.
  • Work with experienced engineers, equipment suppliers, and operations teams to install, commission, troubleshoot, and validate new or modified equipment.
  • Support troubleshooting of automation and manufacturing equipment to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation including functional requirements, equipment specifications, control documentation, work instructions, and validation records.
  • Support integration of manufacturing equipment with existing plant networks, IT infrastructure, and digital manufacturing systems.
  • Work with interfacing teams and local technical experts to understand manufacturing processes and deliver effective automation solutions.
  • Support the collection and analysis of manufacturing data to identify opportunities for improved equipment performance, quality, and productivity.
  • Apply engineering principles and structured problem solving techniques to manufacturing and automation challenges.
  • Participate in project planning, equipment reviews, supplier meetings, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and production readiness activities.
  • Capture and share lessons learned and contribute to the development and implementation of engineering best practices.
  • Ensure all work complies with applicable Rolls-Royce processes, technical standards, health and safety requirements, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, IT, and other technical teams to support reliable operation of automated manufacturing processes.
  • Develop knowledge of Rolls-Royce manufacturing processes, automation standards, and equipment technologies through hands on project experience and mentoring.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline and 1+ years' experience
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • PhD in in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Willingness to work hands on with manufacturing equipment and automation systems.

Preferred Requirements
  • Academic or practical experience with PLC programming, industrial controls, robotics, or automation systems.
  • Familiarity with PLC platforms such as Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, or similar.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, develop solutions, and communicate technical information effectively.
  • Exposure to robot programming or industrial robotic systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical schematics, control panels, sensors, actuators, and industrial automation components.
  • Basic understanding of industrial communication protocols and manufacturing networks.
  • Experience with HMI, SCADA, machine vision, data collection, or manufacturing execution systems.
  • Experience with CAD or other engineering software.
  • Familiarity with machine safety principles, risk assessments, guarding, and safety-related controls.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, controls, or automation problems.
  • Exposure to manufacturing equipment installation, commissioning, validation, or production support.
  • Experience working with equipment suppliers or external engineering partners.
  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving and continuous improvement techniques.
  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in learning new automation and digital manufacturing technologies.
