Full Job Description
Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel (ACC), the Attorney Supervisor is responsible for the management and oversight of a team of Attorneys responsible for representing the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations, the Department and division chiefs and managers in a variety of subject areas within the responsibility and jurisdiction of the Department. The Attorney Supervisor in coordination with the Assistant Chief Counsel plans, directs, coordinates and reviews the work of the OD-Legal attorneys, legal analyst, and other legal support staff, and helps oversee the day-to-day operations of OD-Legal. The Attorney Supervisor will assist the ACC and ensure direct managerial support and oversight is in place to improve the coordination and efficiency of the legal office workflow.

Working Conditions
This position is located at: 355 S. Grand Avenue; Los Angeles, CA 90071.

This position is in an office environment on the 18th floor of a 45-story office building. Employees in this position work in an office at desks, and are required to work extensively on computers as necessary for the drafting of letters, briefs, and other documents, and for research, email communication, file review, training, and other purposes. Attorneys are expected to handle their own word processing, and secretarial support is generally limited to the finalization and filing process. This position requires in-state travel, either locally within Southern California, or for one or two-night overnight trips within California, based on assignments, and as determined according to the needs of the Department. Being in a stationary position for long periods of time.
The hours are usual business hours Monday through Friday. Attorneys are expected to work all hours necessary to accomplish their assignments, and although they will generally average 40 hours a week, longer work hours may occasionally be required. Partial telework schedules are available, which will be determined after consultation with the Assistant Chief Counsel.

Special Requirements Active membership in the California State Bar, and at least eight (8) years of legal experience in the practice of law.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Knowledge concerning the work of the Department, labor and employment law, wage and hour law, and workers' compensation law.
  • Proven ability to manage all phases of litigation, including developing case strategy, conducting discovery, handling motion practice, examining witnesses, and presenting closing argument.
  • Demonstrated experience taking and defending depositions, presenting evidence in administrative hearings or court proceedings, and handling labor and employment related disputes.
  • Prior experience writing and filing briefs in writ proceedings, or for matters in the California Court of Appeal or California Supreme Court and/or federal courts.
  • Experience with mediation, settlement negotiations, or other dispute resolution processes in the labor or employment context.
  • Supervisory or comparable leadership experience, including the ability to mentor or guide legal staff.
  • Experience mediating or adjudicating disputes, including serving as a mediator, ALJ, hearing officer, or judicial law clerk. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability and desire to contribute to a collegial office environment.
  • Prior experience serving as counsel to a public agency.
  • Prior experience analyzing and working on legislation or ad ministrative regulations.
  • Proficiency in Word and other Microsoft applications.
