Job Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision of the warden, the incumbent will assist in the daily planning and coordination of the institutional operations including security, administration and support for the institution.
  • This includes Directors at SCDC Headquarters.
  • Supervises security, custody, and control of inmates, counseling them as necessary.
  • Serves as duty warden and in the capacity of the warden during his/her absence.
  • Supervises the implementation and executing of laws, policies, rules and regulations, as well as operating procedures including OSHA regulations.
  • Writes policies and procedures for a Level II institution.
  • Prepares (writes) various reports, special studies and staff papers, including recommendations relating to proposed changes in policies, operating procedures, rules, regulations and laws.
  • Supervises maintaining the sanitation of the institution, buildings, property etc.
  • Other duties as required.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor's degree and supervisory experience in a correctional environment or relevant military experience. Relevant experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
  • A high school diploma and ten (10) years experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, which must include five (5) years of supervisory experience in a correctional environment.
  • A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for the overall experience on a year for year basis (associate = 2 years, bachelor's and above = 4 years).
  • No substitutions for supervisory experience.
  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
