Job ResponsibilitiesTHIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY PATROL (SCHP) OFFICERS ONLY.This position serves Statewide Operations.Patrols South Carolina (SC) roads and highways, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws as a member of the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) Motorcycle Unit. Schedules and coordinates all statewide Motor Unit Training. Supervises officers in the performance of their duties. Investigates traffic collisions and enforces state and federal criminal laws, providing specialized services of the Motor Unit.
Trains and instructs other officers in proper motorcycle enforcement operations and in the proper care and use of issued equipment. Plans and schedules Motor Unit training for other officers. Keeps abreast of motorcycle skills and equipment. Maintains required Motor Unit and instructor certifications. Supervises officers in the performance of their duties, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures.
Prepares employee schedules and delegates work assignments for shift rotations, to include adjustments for training and special assignments.
Patrols South Carolina highways and conducts law enforcement activities.
Ensures that troopers follow standard operating procedures in performance of duties.
Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with the general public and sound working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, courts, and South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) personnel.
Maintains required law enforcement certifications and current knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations governing SCHP law enforcement operations.
Conducts employee performance reviews and counseling in a fair and impartial manner.
Minimum and Additional RequirementsState Minimum Requirements - A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
Agency Minimum Requirements - Must have at least a high school diploma and the following additional requirements:
TIME IN GRADE - The candidate must possess a minimum of six (6) months of continuous service as a SCHP Corporal by the closing date of this vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a Promotional Examination for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL - An applicant must have successfully completed a Promotional Interview Panel for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION - Any individual who is currently serving a suspension for disciplinary reasons or pending the outcome of an investigation shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process. Any individual who has been involuntarily demoted during the preceding six (6) months of the vacancy closing shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a "Performance Improvement Plan" (PIP), formerly known as a "Warning Notice of Substandard Performance," during the 12 months preceding the closing date of this vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
RESIDENCY - Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy #300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within four (4) months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. SCDPS Policy #300.47 Section IV. D. 2. Personnel assigned to a specialized unit (MAIT, ACERT, etc.) Troopers assigned to a specialized Troop or Unit shall establish a residence within the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility or, if residing outside of the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which their assigned Troop or Unit office is located within 45 minutes. IV.C. Troop/Region/Division/Unit Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.
Additional RequirementsMust possess and maintain SC Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification.
Must possess a Motor Unit Instructor Certification.
Must maintain updated certification in administering speed detection devices and blood alcohol breath tests, and investigating traffic collisions. Department issued motorcycles must be stored in a location approved by the SCHP Troop Commander. Will schedule and coordinate all statewide Motor Unit Training. Must have excellent knowledge of laws relating to traffic law enforcement. Must have the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Must demonstrate the ability to manage and supervise a large group of personnel. Must make accurate, immediate complex decisions without consultation with higher level management when needed. Must have the ability to meet and deal with public officials and the general public under adverse conditions. Employee has broad latitude for independent action in management and supervision of personnel.
Physical requirements include, but are not limited to: walking, sitting, running, lifting and working in an outdoor environment.
Additional CommentsThe Area Coordinated Enforcement members may be required to travel across the state for enforcement duties.
Overnight travel required on special assignments and/or response to critical incidents.
