Full Job Description

Clyde & Co has an opening for an associate lawyer with experience in general insurance and professional indemnity to join the insurance litigation group. As a lawyer at our Firm, you will be involved all aspects of litigation including mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals, in a broad scope of general litigation matters, with a focus on Commercial disputes. You will have the opportunity of working in an entrepreneurial atmosphere and as part of a collegial team, all the while further developing your career.


Key Responsibilities

  • Providing legal analysis and advice in the area of general litigation matters, working with senior lawyers and partners in those sectors.
  • Drafting pleadings, motion materials and factums, as well as pre-trial memorandums and mediation memorandums.
  • Conducting research and providing legal analysis.
  • Preparing correspondence to counsel opposite and clients.
  • Maintaining relations with the clients.
  • Reviewing documents in preparation for litigation.
  • Preparing for and attending examinations for discovery and mediations.
  • Appearing in court, independently or with senior counsel, to argue motions and attend pre-trials.
  • Assisting with or conducting solo preparations and attending independently or with senior counsel at trials or other adjudicative hearings.
  • Attending B.C. or other Canadian Bar Association events for the purpose of professional and business development opportunities.
  • Performing certain tasks related to practice management.
  • Developing his/her overall set of skills in an on-going fashion.
  • Meeting other related business needs or priorities as they may arise from time to time.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Graduate from a recognized University / Common Law School and qualified to practice law in the Province of British Columbia (member in good standing with the B.C. Bar).
  • Having two (2) to six (6) years of post-qualification experience.
  • Relevant experience would be in private practice or in-house legal practice, with a focus on general insurance and professional indemnity.
  • Experience in coverage analysis under insurance policies would be an asset.
  • Excellent legal writing and communication skills.
  • Sound judgement and legal reasoning, great analytical skills and creativity in solving problems.
  • Ability to develop strategies, present a clear plan to the client, and communicate instructions rigorously and precisely.
  • Proven advocacy talent.
  • High integrity and intellectual rigor.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and keen interest in building client relationships.
  • Able to work independently, as well as in a team.

The salary range of $ 130,000 to $ 170,000 — based on experience level and overall qualifications—represents our firm’s reasonable expectation of pay at the time of posting, in accordance with BC’s Pay Transparency Act.
