Position Overview

As an Associate General Counsel, Labor Relations, you will, under the general supervision of the Vice President of Labor Relations, work closely with Human Resources, Operations, and Senior Management to handle both complex and day-to-day labor relations issues; independently negotiate labor contracts as first chair; represent the Company in labor arbitration; defend against unfair labor practice charges before the NLRB; train supervisors and managers on a variety of legal topics; and, when necessary, supervise union election campaigns.

This role will serve as one of the Company's labor law experts, answering questions from the field organization regarding the interpretation of CBAs, state and federal labor laws, and related matters on a daily basis. You will also handle a variety of labor law matters, including ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, defending against claims in state and federal court, and managing outside counsel.

This role will exercise considerable independent leadership in advising various departments and facilities on their overall labor strategies. The role will regularly handle complex labor matters. The Associate General Counsel will serve as a representative of the Labor Team on various cross-functional committees and projects to implement new Company strategies. This role is expected to operate with limited oversight, demonstrating an excellent understanding of the Company's business and the ability to align legal advice with Company strategy.

Job Description
  • Full-Time, Remote Role
  • Travel: Up to 50% travel to assigned locations


You will contribute by:
  • Influencing at the executive level by initiating and leading cross-functional project teams to improve or revise Company labor policy.
  • Advising HR and management, including executives, on complex labor relations matters.
  • Establishing long-term labor strategies for assigned facilities. Advising management, including executives, on labor relations and contract interpretation issues. Preparing for and independently leading the negotiation of labor agreements.
  • Handling grievances and labor arbitrations involving discipline and contract interpretation disputes and investigating and responding to unfair labor practice (ULP) charges.
  • Determining the need for, developing, and delivering training for supervisors and managers on a variety of labor relations topics.
  • Supervising and managing the Company's response to union organizing campaigns.
  • Ensuring compliance with state and federal labor laws, including advising Company stakeholders on required changes and overseeing implementation of those changes.


We're searching for candidates with:
  • J.D. degree and active license to practice law.
  • 7-10 years of experience in labor and employment law, preferably in both in-house and law firm settings.
  • Ability to analyze complex business processes and data and apply legal requirements in fact-driven settings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of primary federal labor and employment laws, including the NLRA, Title VII, FMLA, WARN Act, ADEA, and related laws.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to understand and prepare materials appropriate for a professional business environment in English.
  • Ability and desire to quickly learn new areas of the law and the business, with a willingness to take on increasing responsibility as proficiency is demonstrated.
  • Ability to make timely decisions that may have a significant impact on the business while working under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated genuine interest in traditional labor law, which is an essential element of the position.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed.
