THE OPPORTUNITY

Vir Bio is looking for an Associate Director, Tax and Accounting, where you'll serve in a highly visible, strategic role with significant impact on our global tax posture as we transition from an R&D organization into a commercial-stage company. You will be responsible for all aspects of the Company's global tax function, including tax strategy, tax provision, compliance, planning, and risk management. Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer, this role is currently an individual contributor position with the potential opportunity to build and lead a tax team as the company grows and commercializes its products.

The ideal candidate has deep experience in corporate tax for multinational organizations, including commercialization of products, supply-chain / IP planning, and operating in a loss-making, pre-commercial environment that evolves into revenue-generating operations.

This role is located in our San Francisco headquarters with an expectation of 3 days per week in office.
WHAT YOU'LL DO

Tax Provision & Reporting (ASC 740)
  • Oversee the quarterly and annual income tax provision process (ASC 740), including calculations (prepared by external tax service providers), documentation, internal controls, and support for external auditors
  • Evaluate uncertain tax positions, valuation allowances, and the tax implications of equity compensation and other complex transactions
  • Ensure accurate and timely tax disclosures for SEC filings (10-Q, 10-K, and other public reporting as applicable)
  • Act as the company's "Head of Tax," providing strategic and tactical tax guidance to senior management and cross-functional stakeholders.

Compliance & Risk Management
  • Oversee global income tax compliance, including U.S. federal, state, and local filings prepared by external tax service providers, as well as coordination of foreign tax filings.
  • Manage external tax advisors and service providers to ensure high-quality, cost-effective support.
  • Establish and maintain tax-related internal controls and documentation in alignment with SOX and company policies.
  • Monitor and assess the impact of evolving tax legislation (e.g., U.S. tax reform, OECD Pillar Two, global minimum tax) on the company and advise senior leadership accordingly.

Tax Strategy & Planning
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive global tax strategy aligned with the Company's business objectives, capital structure, and U.S. commercialization plans.
  • Partner with Finance, Accounting, Legal, and Business Development to structure commercial arrangements, licensing, collaborations, and supply-chain models in a tax-efficient and compliant manner.
  • Lead tax planning for the anticipated commercial launch of our Hepatitis Delta product in the U.S., including manufacturing and distribution structures, as well a potentially transfer pricing and cross-border cash repatriation.
  • Evaluate and optimize the use of net operating losses (NOLs), tax credits, and other attributes, including in the U.S. and our foreign subsidiaries.

Commercialization & Operational Support
  • Serve as the primary tax partner to commercial, supply chain, and operations teams as we prepare for and execute product launch within the U.S.
  • Work with supply chain and assist with any sales and use tax requirements as we prepare for the U.S. launch of our HDV program (assistance from tax consultants)
  • Advise on tax aspects of product pricing, distribution agreements, inventory flows, and third-party manufacturing and logistics arrangements.
  • Support evaluation and implementation of transfer pricing policies and documentation.

Other Responsibilities
  • Manage the Company's corporate insurance (assistance from our insurance broker).
  • Handle any VAT tax questions (assistance from tax consultants including international tax consultant)
  • Assist supply chain with federal and state sales and use tax questions (assistance from tax consultants)
  • Lead for other tax related questions including payroll (assistance from tax payroll consultant), franchise/local taxes and property taxes.
  • Support government related inquiries including census bureau questionnaires
  • Support team with reviewing potential impacts of tariffs
  • Communicate complex tax concepts clearly and proactively to non-tax stakeholders, including the executive team and audit committee as needed.

  • 10+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, including significant experience in multinational corporate environments (public company or large private).
  • Strong technical expertise in U.S. federal and state corporate income tax, ASC 740, and international tax.
  • Demonstrated experience as the lead owner of the tax provision and global tax compliance, either in-house or as a senior advisor.
  • Proven experience supporting or leading tax aspects of commercialization and product launch (preferably in biotech/pharma or a similarly regulated industry).
  • Hands-on, "roll up your sleeves" approach; comfortable operating as a sole tax resource while building scalable processes.
