Associate Director, Residence Life

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Associate Director, Residence Life at its Detroit campus location.

JobPurpose

Under thedirection of the Senior Director, Housing & Residence Life, the Associate Directorin collaboration with department leaders provides leadership and direction tothe staff and educational programs in University residence halls andapartments. Participates with University partners in Student Life initiatives;oversees residential leadership development and resident self-governance;trains and ensures staff and residents comply with residential regulations andthe University's Code of Conduct.

  • Provides overall leadership and direction tostaff, including student staff. Setsexpectations, focus, and professional development plans. Provides coaching,mentoring and teaching to ensure staff meet industry standards. Manages the administrative process forassigned staff including hiring, promotions, terminations, disciplinaryprocedures and salary adjustments. Provides ongoing performance feedback,goal setting, and development plans for staff. Plan for future staffingneeds. Provides timely communications tostaffs
  • Participates in the development and executionof programs and events for University owned residence halls and apartmentbuildings with focus on leadership, student development and promotion ofdiversity.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Facilitiesand the Associate Director of Operations to coordinate the implementation of policiesand procedures related to facilities and operations. Ensures staffparticipation and cooperation in marketing efforts, assessment,move-in/move-out activities, and in addressing facility and operational needs.
  • Oversees hall and apartment student conductprocesses, which include counseling, advising, mediation and referral to campusresources. Works closely with the legaldepartment, campus police, student conduct officers and the Dean of Student'sOffice in the coordination of the resident conduct process.
  • Participates in campus wide and departmentaltask forces and committees as assigned.
  • Serves as liaison to internal and externalconstituents representing Housing interests as necessary. Provides adviceregarding policy and procedures; attends meetings, conferences andseminars. Maintains memberships inpertinent professional organizations.
  • Participates in planning and organizingdepartmental goals, objectives and budget. Responsible for maintaining budgetassigned to area of responsibility.
  • Serves, as part of the management team, in theweekend and evening on-call rotation. Provides response to emergencies whenneeded.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree
  • Master'sdegree from an accredited college or university in Student Development, StudentPersonnel or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of education andexperience.

Experience: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
  • Minimum threeyears' experience with student developmental issues and strategies forimplementing a comprehensive college/university residential program. Minimum offive years in progressively responsible roles. Experience demonstrating strongorganizational, communication and problem solving skills required.

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
  • ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP: Ability and willingness to make independentdecisions, exhibiting sound and accurate judgment. Demonstrated ability tomotivate professional staff and students.
  • SUPERVISORY SKILLS: Ability to delegate work, set clear direction andmanage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Ability to train,develop, assess and offer feedback to staff members. Ability to foster teamworkamong staff members.
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS: Ability to prepare and present specialprojects with little or no supervision/oversight. Ability to meet deadlines andto take large complex projects and divide them into smaller achievable tasksorganized into a plan. Strong,detail-oriented project management skills.
  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Effective interpersonal and customer serviceskills. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally bothorally and in writing. Ability to present information clearly andprofessionally one-on-one and in groups; ability to serve as a public face forthe department within the University and to external audiences.
  • ANALYTICAL SKILLS: Ability to make valid and reliable evaluation ofinformation. Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • LEARNING AGILITY: Independent and innovative self-starter who can displayan ability to learn rapidly and adapt quickly to changing situations.
