Associate Director, Quality, Research, and Education - Dept. Internal Medicine

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Associate Director, Quality, Research, and Education - Dept. Internal Medicine at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

Job Purpose:

This position provides senior-level leadership and integration across clinical quality improvement, research, and health professions workforce education within an academic, Ryan White-funded adult HIV program. The Associate Director serves a critical organizational role by aligning clinical quality improvement initiatives, research initiatives, and HIV syndemic (including STD, TB, and viral hepatitis) workforce development activities to advance high-quality HIV syndemic care, innovation and training for students, faculty, and staff within the University and throughout the state of Michigan.

The primary goals of the position are to ensure strategic oversight of programmatic activities, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthen partnerships with academic institutions, research collaborators, and funders. This position reports to the Director, WSU Adult HIV Program.

Essential Functions:

Strategic Leadership and Program Integration

Provide leadership for clinical quality improvement, research, and education initiatives, ensuring alignment across clinic operations, academic missions, and compliance with grant-funded workplans and regulations.

MATEC Michigan Program Director

Responsible for budget and workplan development for HIV workforce development grants. Provide direct supervision including coaching and performance management to Program Manager, MATEC Michigan in the implementation of grant workplans, compliance and budget monitoring. In collaboration with Clinical Director, provide clinical oversight of training programs.

Clinical Research Leadership

Provide executive oversight of clinical trials, pharmaceutical studies, implementation science, and behavioral research activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, integration with clinical care and alignment with institutional and sponsor priorities. Support the Principal Investigator and overall program in identifying new research opportunities and in the dissemination of research findings.

HIV Interprofessional Education, Practice Transformation, Clinical Education and Technical Assistance

Lead and support interprofessional education activities and practice transformation efforts through the AETC local partner site, including contributing subject matter expertise to training and technical assistance initiatives. Deliver and oversee high-quality clinical education and technical assistance for healthcare providers and systems in support of AETC goals, HIV workforce development and evidence-based HIV prevention and treatment practices. Prepare and mentor clinical staff in the role of preceptor and oversee the clinical rotations of students from multiple health professions programs, serving as liaison between clinic and academic programs for clinical placements. Clinical staff oversight will include hiring, coaching and performance management.

Clinical Quality Improvement Oversight

Oversee clinic-wide quality improvement strategies led by the Clinical Quality Improvement Lead, including performance measurement, data-driven interventions and continuous quality improvement aligned with Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program standards and those of all funded activities. Evaluate and disseminate results to add to the relevant evidence base.

External Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement

Serve as a key liaison between the clinic and external stakeholders, including academic institutions, research collaborators, community partners, funders and federal or state agencies, representing the program in high-level meetings and collaborative initiatives.

Unique duties:

Qualifications:

Education: Doctorate degree

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred or doctorate in a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)

Experience leading large-scale or multi-site quality improvement or education initiatives preferred.

Teaching or faculty-level experience in academic health sciences setting preferred.

A current and continued clinical appointment serving as a clinician within an Infectious Disease clinic preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

In-depth knowledge of HIV care delivery models, the HIV syndemic and related conditions and evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies, including a working knowledge of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.

Knowledge of interprofessional education principles; healthcare workforce development strategies; clinical research operations including human subjects' protections, IRB processes, and regulatory compliance.

Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to manage senior-level staff and interdisciplinary teams and participate in strategic planning and program integration skills across clinical, research, and education domains.

Strong written and verbal communication skills for academic, clinical and stakeholder audiences.

Ability to lead and interpret quality improvement initiatives using data-driven approaches.

Ability to align programmatic activities with institutional missions, federal and state grant requirements and evolving clinical standards and guidelines.

Ability to develop and sustain partnerships with academic institutions, clinical sites, research collaborators, and funders and ability to represent the program in high-level internal and external forums.

Ability to exercise independent judgment in complex clinical, academic, and programmatic environments.

Advanced knowledge of the relevant grant-funded initiatives including federal and state grants: HRSA, CDC, NIH, SAMHSA, and MDHHS.

Familiarity with NIH, industry, or foundation sponsored research including experience with grant-writing and grant oversight.

Knowledge of healthcare systems transformation and implementation of science frameworks.

Ability to translate emerging research and policy into practice and educational programming.

Ability to mentor future clinical and programmatic leaders in HIV care, research, and education.
