Ensures optimal utilization of resources, service delivery, safe patient care, and compliance with all applicable local, state, federal and NYC Health + Hospitals rules and regulations and nursing standards of care to improve outcomes and the patient experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:1. Oversees the implementation and evaluation of care delivery models for multiple units within a service line. Monitors service-line quality metrics/dashboards. Ensures regulatory and accreditation alignment across departments.
2. Assumes responsibility of day-to-day operations of nursing service. Develops and manages operational initiatives with measurable outcomes and participates in a system of continuing evaluation of nursing service.
3. Collaborates with senior leadership and health care setting executive staff, medical staff, administration and other departments in developing and implementing philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of nursing service. Reviews and recommends evidence-based revisions, as needed, to unit-specific policies and procedures.
4. Assumes responsibility for developing and implementing a staffing plan and directing selection of nursing personnel. Plans for adequate daily staff and equipment coverage, and makes staffing adjustments to achieve departmental goals and objectives, as necessary. Builds leadership pipeline and succession readiness.
5. Assumes responsibility for strategic planning, directing, organizing and evaluating nursing service and/or health programs.
6. Ensures efficiency, compliance, and strategic financial alignment with departmental goals and objectives by reviewing capital allocation, implementing staffing models and optimizing financial stewardship across departments.
7. Assumes responsibility for supervising assistant directors of nursing and other appropriate staff and directing the evaluation of personnel performance. Responsible for performance evaluations and disciplinary action of all assigned staff.
8. Analyzes quantitative and qualitative data regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to identify trends and areas for improvement; implements system-level interventions.
9. Supports nursing governance and professional practice structures and promotes Magnet principles through shared accountability and responsibility for making decisions that affect nursing practice.
10. Oversees Full-Time Equivalent modeling and workforce planning. Facilitates professional development of nursing staff and leads strategic retention and engagement efforts.
11. Assesses nursing services through rounds, chart reviews and observation/evaluation of nursing care.
12. Participates in research projects, as applicable. Develops, plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates other assigned projects and health programs.
13. Participates in operating and procedural committees, as assigned. Maintains accurate and complete records related to nursing operations and services that are and in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements. Participates in implementing an effective system of clinical and administrative nursing records and reports.
14. Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice and/or operations by participating in the Root Cause Analysis process and implements corrective action plans, as necessary; reports outcomes to executive leadership.

16. May assume responsibility for planning, directing, coordinating and evaluating nursing service on the weekend/evening and/or night tours. Provides guidance to nursing administrators to ensure continuity of patient care on off tours.
17. Performs all duties of the Director of Nursing in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications1. Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing Administration or a related nursing discipline; and three (3) years of satisfactory nursing experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative or supervisory capacity, which may include managing a specific department or nursing unit within a hospital, overseeing patient care, staff management and the day-to-day operations of the department, as well as relevant clinical nursing experience in the area of nursing practice assigned; or
3. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing; and four (4) years of satisfactory nursing experience, three (3) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative or supervisory capacity described in 2 above.
4. May require Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) depending on assignment/health care setting. If required, BLS must be obtained within sixty (60) calendar days of appointment to the title and maintained for the duration of the assignment.
Department PreferencesPreferred: - Four or more years of Ambulatory Care nursing leadership experience.
- Valid Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification (AMB-BC) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
