Work Shifts8:00 A.M - 4:00 P.MDuties & ResponsibilitiesPosition OverviewThe Associate Director of Nursing (ADON) for Medical-Surigcal Services is an integral member of the Nursing Leadership team, providing critical administrative and clinical oversight. This management role delivers supervisory and operational coverage for the nursing department and the hospital at large, primarily during evening and night shifts. Operating under the direction of the Director of Nursing or Chief Nursing Officer, the ADON ensures seamless patient throughput, regulatory compliance, and the highest standards of patient care.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical & Operational Leadership
- Shift Command: Provide administrative and supervisory coverage for the nursing department and overall hospital operations during designated evening/night shifts.
- Interim Oversight: Serve as the vital managerial and clinical link between staff, nurse managers, and department directors in their absence.
- Emergency Response: Respond to all critical medical emergencies (Rapid Responses, Cardiac Arrests, MTP, etc.) to provide on-scene leadership, guidance, and support.
- Risk Management: Anticipate, troubleshoot, and resolve administrative or operational challenges, escalating complex issues to off-site department heads when necessary.
Workforce Management & Staff Development
- Dynamic Staffing: Assess patient acuity and census across units to develop, implement, and dynamically adjust staffing plans to ensure safe, adequate care.
- Performance Monitoring: Oversee staff compliance with clinical policies, including documentation, narcotic counts, medication administration, and code cart assessments.
- Mentorship & Feedback: Provide ongoing support, guidance, and clinical problem-solving resources to floor staff; deliver written performance feedback and anecdotes to Nurse Managers to aid in evaluations or corrective actions.
- Professional Growth: Facilitate staff participation in professional development and communicate continuing education needs to the Education Director.
Patient Throughput & Quality Excellence
- Flow Optimization: Assist physicians and nursing staff with admission criteria, status assignments (observation vs. admission), and internal/external patient transfers.
- Patient Experience: Make frequent, purposeful rounds to assess unit status; collaborate with the leadership team to address patient/family inquiries and strategize ways to elevate the patient experience.
- Continuous Improvement: Review quality data, participate in performance improvement initiatives, and monitor the effectiveness of department action plans.
- Policy & Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to hospital policies, safety protocols, infection control procedures, and regulatory standards (TJC, NYSDOH, NYCDOAH).
Minimum Qualifications1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3) below.
2. A Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education or an equivalent field and a minimum of six years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which four years shall have been in a supervisory, teaching or administrative capacity; or,
3. A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and seven years of satisfactory nursing experience, five years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or,
4. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
