Position OverviewWe're looking for an
Associate Director, MEP Engineering to join our engineering studio. In this role, you'll lead project management efforts while overseeing a team of engineers and technical staff. You'll ensure quality, profitability, and timely delivery across MEP/FP engineering projects while mentoring staff and supporting their professional development.
You will also provide senior-level technical support across complex projects involving existing buildings, restoration, and rehabilitation, while serving as a project lead on select assignments.
What You'll Do- Lead and manage a team of engineers, Project Managers, and technical staff.
- Promote teamwork and coordinate job assignments for optimal utilization.
- Review project budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
- Monitor project phases, budgets, billing, and accounts receivable.
- Perform quality assurance and coordinate with discipline specialists as needed.
- Act as Senior Project Manager for assigned MEP/FP engineering projects.
- Provide technical oversight of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm, and life safety systems.
- Ensure compliance with NYC Building Codes, energy codes, and applicable regulations.
- Mentor and coach team members; support career development and technical growth.
- Support coordination with architects, structural engineers, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Assist in recruitment, onboarding, and retention of engineering staff.
- Support business development efforts, proposals, and client relationships.
- Report on staffing needs, workload, and team performance to the Director.
- Champion HLZAE's mission, vision, and core values.
What You'll Bring
Required:- 8+ years of experience in MEP engineering or related discipline, with a focus on existing buildings and retrofitting projects.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering field.
- Strong project management experience including budgeting, scheduling, and client coordination.
- Knowledge of NYC Building Codes, zoning regulations, and existing building requirements.
- Experience with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
Preferred:- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred (or ability to obtain).
- Experience with façade restoration, building envelope projects, or multidisciplinary consulting environments.
- Experience with local law compliance, energy upgrades, and sustainable systems.
- Certifications such as LEED, CEM, or commissioning-related credentials.
Work Environment & Schedule- This position is based in New York, NY, with a hybrid work schedule.
- Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Travel requirements: Local job site visits as needed. (~25-50% in field)
Compensation & Benefits- Salary range: $155,000 - $175,000, based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
