Associate Cell Culture Scientist - Berkeley, CA

As an Associate Cell Culture Scientist, you develop and optimize chemical and biological processes to enhance yield, quality, and cost; you contribute to process transfers from laboratory to production (scale-up) to ensure robust, commercially viable manufacturing; you provide technical expertise and rapid troubleshooting to maintain competitive production processes while ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations; you manage and develop laboratory technicians, maintain accurate technical documentation, and participate in interdisciplinary project teams supporting mAb and cell therapy development from early-stage research through clinical and commercial manufacturing.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design and conduct moderate to complex process development experiments under limited guidance to advance mAb and cell therapy programs;
  • Execute and follow GMP requirements during clinical manufacturing activities and complete required GMP training;
  • Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and translate findings into actionable process improvements;
  • Evaluate and implement new methods, techniques, and assays to improve process performance and robustness;
  • Troubleshoot failed experiments, assays, or procedures and propose practical, timely corrective actions;
  • Provide guidance, training, and day-to-day supervision to laboratory technicians and ensure high standards for laboratory practice;
  • Prepare clear analytical and interpretative reports, present project updates in team meetings, and maintain well-organized laboratory notebooks and documentation;
  • Collaborate across cross-functional teams to support process transfers, scale-up activities, and interdisciplinary projects.

WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:
  • BS in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline and at least 2 years of relevant experience in process development or bioprocess work;
  • Hands-on experience designing and executing cell culture and/or mAb process development experiments;
  • Working knowledge of GMP principles and experience supporting clinical or commercial manufacturing activities;
  • Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills with experience interpreting experimental results and troubleshooting laboratory processes;
  • Proven ability to document work thoroughly, prepare reports, and maintain audited laboratory notebooks;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams and communicate results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) or additional relevant experience in bioprocess development or cell therapy scale-up;
  • Experience leading or contributing to process transfer and scale-up from laboratory to pilot or commercial manufacturing;
  • Experience managing or mentoring laboratory staff and handling personnel administrative tasks;
  • Familiarity with screening scientific literature, supporting IP generation, or preparing research reports.


Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $79,920.00 - $119,880.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.

This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
