Position Description Summary:

The Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at The George Washington University (GW) in Washington, DC, invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering to start as early as Fall 2026. This search is open to strong candidates with a systems-centric research and teaching record in systems engineering or a related field. We are particularly interested in candidates who can support our multi-disciplinary initiative in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), which studies AI in the context of the systems and society in which it is deployed. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Complex system architecture, design, evaluation, and operation, especially related to AI-enabled systems
• Test, evaluation, validation, and verification of AI enabled systems
• Artificial intelligence and machine learning to support systems engineers in their work.
• Techniques and metrics for designing and evaluating explainable, interpretable, and trustworthy AI-enabled systems
• Management, policy, risk, and decision-making for AI-enabled systems

New faculty will join a vibrant department with a diverse faculty, housed in a $275M building that fosters interdisciplinary efforts across multiple fields. We are especially interested in faculty who can engage in the AI-related interdisciplinary efforts already identified as priorities for GW, such as the GW Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Initiative (GWTAI) and the NIST-NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law and Society (TRAILS).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Faculty hired in this position will be expected to build a substantial research program, mentor graduate students in research, and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Minimum Qualifications:

By the date of appointment, applicants for the Assistant Professor of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering position must have earned a doctorate in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field (including, but not limited to, human factors engineering, computer science, industrial/organizational psychology, industrial engineering, information systems, etc.). ABD candidates will be considered but must complete all degree requirements for the doctorate by the date of the appointment. They must also have demonstrated experience or potential for building a nationally recognized research program, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research, and teaching across multiple topics in our undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
