Mental Health Unit-Open Unit Assistant Director Patient Care (RN) - RWJBarnabas Health

As a Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:
  • The assistant director of patient care (ADPC), is responsible for the function of the department, ensures that those under his/her supervision adhere to the goals and objectives of the department in accordance with its policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to and supports the mission, vision and values of the department and organizations
  • Assists with the development of policies and procedures for the department, maintains high visibility on the unit and is a clinical resource person who acts as a role model for the staff on the designated area.
  • Assistant Director Patient Care is responsible for maintaining the continuity of patient flow, provides a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Directs patient care in a manner that promotes the highest standards of care.
  • Evaluates the quality of nursing care delivered by nursing staff by reviewing plans for care and teaching protocols, assessing patient and interviewing.
  • Identifies problems and/or areas requiring improvements
  • Ensures patient satisfaction as evidenced by Press Ganey scores in response to patient questionnaires.
  • Resolve problems involving staff, patients, families, physicians and other hospital departments
  • Communicates effectively and seeks direction in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Serves on inter and intradepartmental committees and special task forces; In collaboration with Nurse Director ensures that state, JCAHO and federal requirements are completed and documented in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • In collaboration with Nurse Director develops unit goals in accordance with departmental goals and plans to change to improve patient care.
  • Effectively Manager the day-to-day operations of the unit.
  • Assists with unit staff schedules; daily, identifies the number and level of personnel required to provide patient care based on patient needs and individual needs and individual skill levels, and adjusts staffing and assignments appropriately.
  • Assesses the physical environment of the unit for cleanliness and safety hazards, and responds appropriately to effect a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, personnel and the public; evaluates equipment and supplies, and monitors for quality and effectiveness.
  • Reviews work in progress to ensure that treatments, medications, tests and procedures will be completed in a timely manner
  • Providing safe, evidence-based medications, treatments, and hands on care grounded in strong clinical judgment
  • Collaborate with Nurse Director to monitor unit budgets.
  • Maintains Clinical Competencies Necessary for the Provision of Care and Staff Professional Development.
  • Serving as a clinical partner to physicians and advanced providers, offering insight that supports timely, well-coordinated care decisions
  • Providing clear, compassionate education to patients and families so they feel informed, supported, and prepared for the next phase of care
  • Ensuring accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record to promote continuity and patient safety
  • Contributing your voice during interdisciplinary rounds, helping drive seamless communication and smooth transitions of care
  • Taking an active role in a highly collaborative team environment where shared accountability and teamwork directly impact outcomes

  • To be considered for this RN opportunity, you must hold an active New Jersey Registered Nurse license in good standing and a current American Heart Association BLS certification. A master's degree in nursing is preferred and a bachelor's degree in nursing is required. Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a specialty. Must be comfortable with electronic medical record systems (EMR) like EPIC. This position is a full-time position on the evening shift.
