Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage staff accountants and their workflows.
  • Support CFOs and/or CEOs of client companies through interaction and assistance.
  • Collaborate with senior management at Malaspina to manage client files and relationships directly.
  • Oversee General Ledgers and ensure accuracy in accounting transactions.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements, including MD&As.
  • Review working papers supporting financial statements and MD&As, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
  • Manage regulatory reporting and audit processes with external auditors.
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors for compliance and strategy advice.
  • Assist in developing and implementing company templates and strategic plans.
  • Handle ad-hoc accounting and administrative requests as needed.

Full Job Description
Assistant Controller Responsibilities:
  • Over-sight, management and development of staff accountants and related work-flows
  • Interacting with/supporting the CFOs and/or CEOs of client companies
  • Working with/supporting the senior management at Malaspina, with a view to stepping into managing client files directly and taking on client relationships directly
  • Oversight of General Ledgers and underlying accounting transactions
  • Preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Preparation of quarterly and annual MD&As
  • Preparation and/or review of working papers supporting financial statements and MD&As
  • Managing other regulatory reporting
  • Managing the audit/review processes with external auditors
  • Liaising with external tax advisors
  • Assisting with development and roll-out of Company templates
  • Assisting with roll-out of Company strategic plans
  • Assisting with other ad-hoc requests; and
  • Perform other accounting, client related and/or administrative tasks as needed.

Assistant Controller Skill sets:
  • 5+ years of experience in an accounting/finance department of a public company or with a CPA firm (must include public company experience if from a CPA firm)
  • CPA designation or international equivalent is preferred
  • Deep understanding of IFRS accounting and financial reporting for public companies is required
  • Experience drafting and/or auditing financial statements and notes, as well as preparing and reviewing supporting working papers
  • Proven experience working in teams, managing staff, and reporting to a Controller, CFO, or other senior personnel
  • Exceptional communication skills - both verbal and written - with strong command of English
  • Highly organized, with excellent multi-tasking and problem-solving abilities
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Advanced IT proficiency, with experience using multiple accounting platforms and a comfort level with digitized environments
  • Permanent residency or Canadian citizenship is required
  • Experience with mining or exploration companies is a plus
