Full Job Description
Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to help lead Allied's property accounting function. The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and directly supervises a group of property accountants, with responsibility for the quality, timeliness, and consistency of their work. This role reviews monthly property financials, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and owner reporting; provides backup coverage when accountants are on PTO or positions are open; and helps resolve accounting issues with property operations and clients.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The Assistant Controller must be equally comfortable mentoring accountants, reviewing detailed accounting work, stepping in to complete work when needed, communicating with other in the Accounting and other departments, working with clients, improving workflows in Yardi and related systems, and other accounting-related responsibilities and projects as assigned.
Key Responsibilities

Leadership
  • Supervise, train, and develop assigned property Accountants, with clear expectations for quality, deadlines, and accountability.
  • Coordinate workload and backup coverage for PTO, vacancies, and peak close periods, stepping in directly as necessary.
  • Support performance reviews, hiring, onboarding, and long-term development of the property accounting team.

Financial Reporting & Controls
  • Review monthly property financial statements and owner reporting for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Review and assist with bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, allocations, and other key account activity.
  • Ensure assigned properties meet monthly close deadlines and follow Allied accounting policies and client requirements.
  • Identify errors, unusual variances, and process gaps; work with accountants and operations to resolve and document corrections.

Property Accounting Operations & Coverage
  • Provide hands-on accounting support and direct coverage for Property Accountants during PTO, vacancies, and workload spikes.
  • Review and approve applicable funds transfers, property mortgage payments and owner distributions, reserve and security deposit activity, and other assigned cash transactions within Allied approval policies.
  • Assist with management fee, billback, intercompany, payroll/reimbursable expense, and other property or corporate reconciliations as assigned.

Client, Audit & Compliance Support
  • Serve as an accounting point of escalation for assigned properties and communicate with clients, Portfolio Managers, and property teams as needed.
  • Support year-end close, CPA and audit requests, 1099s, tax filings, and other regulatory reporting under the direction of the Controller.
  • Help document and enforce accounting procedures, internal controls, and appropriate segregation of duties.

Systems & Process Improvement
  • Serve as a hands-on resource for assigned accountants and property accounting workflows, including Yardi and related tools.
  • Help maintain data integrity, consistent accounting setup, and appropriate user workflows.
  • Identify and implement practical process improvements that make reporting more accurate, timely, and efficient.
Qualifications
