About the Role

JHCE is seeking to hire a full-time assistant-level construction engineer. Under general direction, the assistant construction engineer performs professional work of average difficulty following established methods and procedures; applies professional principles and practices to problems.

The assistant construction engineer may act as project coordinator, field engineer, office engineer, or assistant field contract administrator.

Under general supervision, the assistant construction engineer performs work in the field and office which requires judgement. The assistant construction engineer may provide assistance in the development of bid proposals, task order management, and contract management, etc.

The assistant is a second-level classification; it is characterized by its focus on routine issues of average complexity and difficulty.

Desired Qualifications
• Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from an engineering or construction management program.
• Possession of a California Certificate of Registration respective to your area of expertise such as a PE or a valid Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certificate.
• Five (2) years verifiable professional-level experience, as applicable to the area of expertise. A masters degree in the area of expertise may substitute for two (1) year of work experience.
• Ability to travel via driven automobile.
• Ability to adapt to changing working conditions, including prolonged standing and sitting, and frequent work in industrial facilities, construction sites, and other natural environments.
• Ability to walk up to 2 miles and lift and carry up to 30 lbs.

Role Responsibilities and Compensation

Actual offered pay within the range listed below is dependent on nature and amount of experience, ability to perform responsibilities, and possession of relevant licenses/certifications.

• Monitors and inspects the work of contractors for compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules.
• Prepares project documentation including daily reports, force accounts, materials testing, and other construction records.
• Participates in and/or conducts planning, preconstruction, coordination, progress, scheduling and field staff meetings.
• Reviews plans, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, constructability reviews, and contract closeout records.
• Assists in detecting and resolving disputes and/or problems and responds to complaints from the public.
• Ensures that all required tests, operations, measurements, and inspections are scheduled, ordered, satisfactorily completed and documented for quality assurance/quality control compliance.
• Verifies and prepares quantity and progress estimates for progress payments.
• Maintains records on unit price quantities, labor, equipment, and progress for change order work.
• Reviews and approves change orders for implementation.
• Makes field measurements and maintains as-built drawings records.
• Conducts and/or witnesses testing of contract material, equipment, and installations.
• Reports safety hazards and defective work to the contractor for correction.
• Drives a vehicle to construction/inspection sites.
• Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

For some positions, the nature of the work may involve disagreeable working conditions such as working in sewers, confined spaces, exposure to inclement weather and various environmental elements, and with hazardous materials and dangerous gases and chemicals. May be required to travel to remote areas and/or to work weekends, shifts and overtime. Some positions may be located outside San Francisco (e.g. Millbrae, Moccasin and Sunol).
