Are you an expert in emissions technology looking to take ownership of complex, cutting-edge testing systems? AVL Test Systems Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Application Engineering Specialist to join our team and play a key role in delivering innovative solutions in the emissions and certification testing space.

In this dynamic role, you'll lead the design, integration, and commissioning of advanced test systems, ensuring they meet rigorous regulatory and certification standards. You'll work hands-on with sophisticated technology, tackle complex technical challenges, and develop solutions that directly impact the future of automotive emissions testing.

Location Requirement: Candidates should be based in Southeast Michigan

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position.

Roles:
  • Design and implement complex emissions and certification test systems
  • Integrate subsystems and lead system commissioning activities
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced technical issues
  • Serve as a technical leader on-site, driving projects through to successful completion
  • Partner closely with Project Managers to manage timelines and budgets
  • Build strong customer relationships through clear communication and exceptional service
  • Act as liaison and company representative with customers.
  • Commission test systems including:
    • Setup and troubleshoot test and measurement systems
    • Implement and tune complex control loops
    • Integrate auxiliary equipment into test systems
    • Setup monitoring and control of relevant safeties
    • Create commissioning documentation
    • Provide training on system applications
    • Obtain customer sign-off
  • Write and implement complex custom tests
  • Provide sales technical support.
  • Provide project engineering technical support.
  • Help desk consultation.
  • Develop and present advanced training.
  • Technical research.
  • Other tasks as assigned


Qualifications/Skills:
  • 5-7+ years of relevant experience in emissions systems, regulations, testing, and commissioning
  • Strong background in the automotive industry
  • Deep technical expertise and a passion for emissions and regulatory compliance
  • Proven ability to take ownership of projects and deliver results in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills
  • Bachelors' degree in engineering or equivalent
  • Master's degree in engineering or equivalent preferred
  • Proficient in mechanical and electrical assembly
  • Proficient in vibration analysis and torsional vibration analysis
  • Experience in test automation equipment preferred
  • In depth understanding of electrical and mechanical processes
  • Expertise related to testing methods and applications
  • Able to read and understand electrical and mechanical schematics and drawings
  • Strong software adaption and modification skills preferred
  • Background in vehicle emissions equipment
    • Experience with programming or testing of vehicle or engine emissions.
  • Understanding of instrumentation and electrical processes
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of PC operation, structure, MS Windows, and computer networking required
