Job Summary
The Application Development AS400 Developer will provide application maintenance, database management, and application-level administration for IBM AS/400 (IBM i/iSeries) environments. The role requires strong hands-on expertise in RPG IV (ILE RPG), RPGLE, CL, SQL, and DB2 for i, along with experience supporting hosted AS400 environments, application security, job management, file transfer automation, and legacy system modernization. The developer will troubleshoot and optimize legacy applications, coordinate with hosting and infrastructure teams, support database and system integrations, and document legacy application flows and dependencies to facilitate future modernization and migration initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain, modify, and optimize legacy application code written in RPG, RPG III, RPG IV (ILE RPG), RPGLE, and Control Language (CL).
• Investigate and troubleshoot operational bugs, batch run anomalies, and user-reported application issues.
• Update application logic to accommodate regulatory changes, licensing requirements, and business process updates.
• Coordinate with hosted environment providers regarding system maintenance, OS patching schedules, database utilities, and environmental adjustments.
• Manage application-level security configurations, including user profiles and object-level authorities.
• Review system audit logs, including QAUDJRN, to help maintain system integrity.
• Manage local job queues, active subsystems, and application-level job schedulers.
• Coordinate with storage and backup teams to support application backup windows, disaster recovery testing, and restoration verification.
• Query, manage, and tune DB2 for i databases.
• Optimize SQL queries and database indexes to improve responsiveness and performance.
• Support secure and automated file transfers using SFTP and FTP.
• Maintain interfaces between hosted AS400 environments and downstream state, regional, or partner systems.
• Collaborate with database administrators and cloud architects to extract, clean, and archive legacy tables.
• Document system flows, database schemas, and application interdependencies to support modernization and migration initiatives.
Required Qualifications
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in AS400, IBM i, or iSeries application development and support.
• Exceptional proficiency in RPG IV (ILE RPG), RPGLE, CL, and SQL on DB2 for i.
• Strong experience with DB2 for i database management, SQL development, and performance tuning.
• Experience working in hosted or managed AS400 environments.
• Experience coordinating with external hosting providers on infrastructure and environmental issues.
• Proven experience with IBM i work management and subsystem coordination.
• Experience with application security, user profile management, and object-level authority.
• Strong background in automated file transfer technologies, including SFTP and FTP.
• Experience supporting application integrations and interfaces with external systems.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
