Job Description:

Caterpillar Switchgear, part of the Electric Power Division, currently has an opening for a CAD Design Engineer located in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Role Definition

As part of a design team, you will design and develop moderately complex electrical projects for release to production in a manner which ensures superior performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability to the worldwide marketplace.

What You Will Do
  • Generate drawing packages in AutoCAD Electrical consisting of front elevations, floor plan layouts, control overviews, and communications plans.
  • Interpret customer drawings and internal quoting documents to develop switchgear drawings.

Data Gathering & Analysis: Knowledge of data gathering and analysis tools, techniques, and processes; ability to collect and synthesize data from a variety of stakeholders and sources in an objective manner to reach a conclusion, goal, or judgment.
  • Describes alternative data-gathering techniques and tools.
  • Documents basic data-gathering methodologies.
  • Identifies key details in reviewing customer drawings and specifications.


Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Explains characteristics and steps in designing solutions for customers.
  • Identifies issues and communicates with others when a decision needs to be made.
  • Define the critical information in AutoCAD blocks to capture design requirements and create the associations needed for accurate wiring and assembly drawings.


Effective Communications: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Delivers helpful feedback that focuses on behaviors without offending the recipient.

  • Identifies available resources and support systems for troubleshooting.
  • Describes problem identification, reporting and escalation procedures.


Additional Requirements
  • Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of low voltage switchgear and medium voltage switchgear is a plus.
  • Knowledge of electrical control systems design is a plus.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD/ AutoCAD Vault for drawing management is a plus.

Summary Pay Range:

$81,370.00 - $122,060.00
