General Summary:

This technical and supervisory position is responsible for the management of operations and technical oversight of Anatomic Pathology section within Bayhealth Medical Center. The anatomic pathology supervisor will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing and preparing patient tissue and cytology samples for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist and Cytotechnologist. This may include receiving, accessioning, embedding, grossing, cutting, mounting, and staining procedures. Ensures that tissue specimens received from surgical or diagnostic procedures are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required. Under the direction of and delegation by the Medical Director, formulates goals, recommends policy, assigns objectives, and establishes standards of practice within the areas of responsibility. Functions as the Technical Consultant under CLIA: 42 CFR [redacted] (moderate complexity) and General Supervisor under CLIA: 42 CFR [redacted] (high complexity) for the Histology section. The Histology supervisor will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in Histology and Cytology about routine procedures, special procedures, and the surgery schedule. This will include coordination and ensuring performance of all of the various tasks required for completion of all procedures. Plans, verifies, evaluates, and assures the competency of all employees performing routine and specialized technical procedures in their section(s) to assure quality of performance is maintained. Works independently with guidance available from the Medical Director, Administrative Director, Lab Managers, and Pathologists. Performs related work in this classification routinely and works outside this class on a temporary, occasional basis.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintains Histology and Cytology accreditation standards for CAP, TJC and other accrediting bodies as appropriate and state/federal licensure. Interprets regulatory, accrediting agency, and licensure standards, requirements or guidelines for Histology and Cytology section(s) and translates requirements into policies and procedures, initiates corrective action as soon as deficiency is identified. Ensures laboratory equipment is maintained and functions properly. Ensures all relevant administrative, equipment, maintenance, policy/procedure, and reference manuals are reviewed annually.
2. Ensures quality assurance processes meet or exceed CLIA (42 CFR [redacted]) requirements for analyses performed in their section. Establishes record keeping system to provide rapid retrieval of information required / requested during regulatory inspections. Designs and implements work processes and monitoring systems to ensure timeliness standards are met.
3. Selects, validates, and implements technologies and test methodologies, ensuring compliance with applicable law, regulation, and standards. Implements, maintains and regularly reviews quality control programs and the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance that are effective in identifying problems and assuring these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process. Resolves technical problems and ensures appropriate remedial action is taken and documented whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test results.
4. Pursues knowledge of current and future advances in medical technology and applies to assigned sections. Demonstrates proficiency, annually, in all tasks required of staff in Histology. Ensures section staff is competent to represent department during regulatory inspections. Implements and monitors a succession plan. Approves sectional updates for all staff meetings. Attends at least half of scheduled staff meetings. Assists clinicians and laboratory staff in the appropriate utilization of laboratory services. Provides for daily surveillance of patient test results. Based on testing results, identifies additional training needs.
5. Demonstrates financial responsibility by monitoring instrument/reagent/maintenance contracts and providing recommendations to manager/director. Recommends vendors, establishes ordering protocols. Devises and maintains inventory systems to assure enough quantities of supplies and reagents; maintains minimum supply levels to ensure uninterrupted services for at least 96 hours during an emergency. Reviews charge master for assigned section(s) and recommends changes within assigned time frame. Participates in the budgeting process; provides recommendations for purchase and stays within approved budget requirements. Completes payroll on payroll due date, including final approval.
6. Designs, administers, and tracks competencies for all employees working in assigned section(s). Reviews and revises annually all training outline(s) and incorporates into the Histology and Cytology procedure manuals. Assures adequate staffing on daily basis for assigned areas. Coordinates student rotations to include instruction in laboratory methods and procedures. Completes all assigned employee's annual checklists / conversations / performance appraisals. Screens applicants and coordinates peer interviews as assigned. Accurately completes all assigned employee counseling/ coaching forms within the time constraints required. In consultation with the Laboratory Manager and Administrative Director may recommend staff terminations. Ensures staff comply with all Safety / Infection Control / HR / and laboratory policies / procedures / programs.
7. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED, Associate Degree Related field Or successful completion of a Histopathology Training Program.
  • Credential(s): Certified Histotechnician Or MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), MT(AMT), CLS(NCA), MLT(ASCP), or equivalent certification.
  • Experience: Required: Ten years' experience in specialty area, and four years supervisory experience, such as a charge technologist or Lead Tech.

Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor Degree Medical Technology Or Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences or specialty area.
  • Credential(s): Certification related to the position, if applicable.
  • Experience: Preferred: Previous supervisory experience in specialty area within a clinical laboratory.
