WSJ Newsroom | Data Analyst (September 2026)
Title: Data Analyst, Newsroom Analytics
The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Data Analyst to join our newsroom data team, reporting to the Senior Manager, Newsroom Analytics. You will work alongside our senior analysts to produce the reports, dashboards, and analyses the newsroom relies on to make editorial, audience, and product decisions every day.
This role is a chance to build real analytical range in a fast-moving newsroom environment. You will spend most of your time in SQL, pulling data, building and maintaining dashboards, and helping the newsroom get answers quickly. You will use AI tools to accelerate this work, building lightweight utilities and automations that improve efficiency across the team and free up time for deeper analysis. You will collaborate closely with more senior colleagues as you take on progressively more independent work, from ad hoc analyses to experiment analysis and measurement projects.
This position will be based in our New York office.
You will:
Write SQL to answer questions from newsroom editorial, audience, and product partners, translating requests into clean, well-scoped queries and clearly communicated results.
Build and maintain dashboards and recurring reports that expand self-serve access to newsroom data.
Support deep-dive analyses on major news events, high-priority moments, and shifts in performance.
Help keep the reporting stack reliable by troubleshooting data quality issues, tracing problems back to their source, and partnering with data engineering to resolve them.
Contribute to A/B tests and experiment analysis in partnership with senior analysts, growing into independent experiment ownership over time.
Learn the newsroom's taxonomies, instrumentation, and foundational datasets, and help maintain shared documentation and analytical patterns the team pulls from.
You have:
1 to 2 years in data analytics, business intelligence, or a related field, or an equivalent internship and project background.
Proficient SQL skills, with experience writing queries against non-trivial datasets.
Comfort with a modern BI or dashboarding tool (Looker, Tableau, Mode, or similar).
Curiosity and speed in picking up new technical concepts and frameworks, and a track record of getting productive on unfamiliar stacks.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to explain data clearly to non-technical partners.
Care for accuracy and detail in work the newsroom will act on.
Standout candidates will have strengths in one or more of the following:
Experience with large-scale data warehouses like BigQuery or Snowflake, or with dbt.
Familiarity with Python for analysis, data wrangling, or automation, and comfort maintaining code in Git.
Exposure to A/B testing and applied statistics.
A background or strong interest in journalism, media, or content, and enthusiasm for driving journalistic outcomes.
Comfort using AI/LLM tooling to speed up analytical workflows.
