Job Summary

Murphy Oil is seeking an experienced Data & Integration Architect to lead the design, architecture, and delivery of enterprise grade data engineering and integration solutions. The ideal candidate is a hands-on technologist with deep expertise in the Microsoft Azure ecosystem, strong data governance acumen, and leadership skills to guide distributed teams while managing key business stakeholder relationships.

The Advisor, Data & Integration Architect, will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and oversee delivery of scalable data engineering and integration solutions across the enterprise, leveraging the Microsoft/Azure technology stack
  • Translate business requirements into robust technical designs, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture standards and long-term scalability
  • Lead end-to-end solution delivery, providing hands-on technical guidance to engineering teams on complex data and integration challenges
  • Design and implement data pipelines and integration workflows using Azure Data Factory, Logic Apps, Azure Functions, and API Management (APIM)
  • Architect and optimize data platforms using Azure Databricks, including performance tuning, cluster management, and workflow orchestration; leverage Genie for AI assisted data exploration and insights
  • Establish and enforce data governance frameworks using Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview, and/or other data marketplace and cataloging tools
  • Apply AI/ML capabilities to enhance data solutions, automate processes, and drive intelligent insights across the platform
  • Write and review high-quality SQL, Python, and PySpark code; ensure engineering best practices are followed across the team
  • Contribute to or guide application development efforts using React and Node.js where full stack capabilities are needed
  • Act as a technical leader and mentor, fostering a collaborative, high performing engineering culture across distributed, global teams
  • Partner closely with business stakeholders, product owners, and cross functional teams to gather requirements, manage expectations, and ensure successful project outcomes
  • Champion Agile delivery practices, participating actively in sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with peers, business units, and leadership; represent the technical function in stakeholder discussions
  • Lead and coordinate delivery across multiple, separate teams (e.g., data and integration teams working in parallel), ensuring alignment, clear ownership, and seamless collaboration between them
  • Mentor junior engineers, actively helping them build and strengthen their programming skills on the core technologies used by the team


Licenses/ Certifications

Relevant Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect, Azure Data Engineer), preferred

Qualifications/ Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Minimum 20 years of progressive experience building and architecting data engineering and integration solutions
  • Strong hands-on expertise with the Microsoft technology stack and Azure cloud platform
  • Deep, hands-on experience with Azure Databricks and Genie (or similar AI assisted data tools)
  • Practical, applied experience with AI/ML capabilities integrated into data engineering workflows
  • Solid understanding of data governance principles and hands-on experience with Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview, and/or other data marketplace/governance tools
  • In-depth, hands-on technical expertise with Azure integration services, including:
    • API Management (APIM)
    • Logic Apps
    • Azure Functions
    • Azure Data Factory (ADF)
  • Strong programming proficiency in SQL, Python, and PySpark
  • Proficiency in Agile/Scrum methodologies and delivery practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to clearly convey complex technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor engineering teams, fostering collaboration and technical excellence
  • Strong team player with demonstrated leadership capability in cross functional, distributed team environments
  • Experience working effectively with globally distributed teams across multiple time zones
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management experience, with the ability to build trusted relationships with business and technology partners
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to guide teams through complex technical scenarios
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with strategic architectural oversight and team leadership


The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Prior experience in technical leadership or architect role within at large, matrixed organization
  • Exposure to modern data marketplace and cataloging tools beyond Purview/Unity Catalog
  • Working knowledge of application development using React and Node.js (added advantage, not mandatory)
