Advanced Practice Provider Endocrine - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA)
The Advanced Practice Provider Endocrine supports the Endocrine and Endocrine-Diabetes services, providing specialized care for patients with endocrine disorders, endocrine tumors, diabetes, and endocrine complications related to cancer treatment. The Advanced Practice Provider Endocrine works collaboratively with faculty physicians and multidisciplinary teams across both inpatient and outpatient settings to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.
As part of UT MD Anderson's Division of Internal Medicine, the Advanced Practice Provider Endocrine plays an integral role in clinical care, patient education, care coordination, and research activities. The Advanced Practice Provider Endocrine contributes to the institution's mission by supporting patients with complex endocrine and metabolic conditions while collaborating with nationally recognized specialists in a highly specialized academic environment.
The ideal candidate is a licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) with experience in endocrine care, internal medicine, or primary care. Oncology experience is a plus but not required. UT MD Anderson welcomes candidates with exceptional experience in hospital medicine, family medicine, or endocrine practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical assessment skills, experience managing complex patient populations, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Open to new graduates who have an oncology background or who completed clinical rotations in an endocrinology clinic.
The typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30am-6:00pm.
Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Practice Management
• Provide direct medical care within scope of practice for Endocrine and Endocrine-Diabetes services
• Manage endocrinopathies, endocrine effects of chemotherapy agents, glucose management needs, lipid control, multiple-dose insulin regimens, and insulin pump therapy
• Independently initiate assigned responsibilities and respond effectively to physicians and healthcare team members
• Communicate clearly through verbal, written, and telephone interactions
• Attend weekly Endocrine Multidisciplinary Conferences
• Attend Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
• Share coverage responsibilities for faculty clinics, attending-on-service assignments, inpatient services, patient triage, consultations, and scheduling coordination
Outpatient Endocrine Services
• Conduct assessments for new, consult, and follow-up patients alongside supervising physicians
• Dictate and document notes for new, consult, and follow-up patient encounters
• Complete clinic and hospital paperwork including CSR forms, radiology and nuclear medicine requests, clinical pathway placement, and prescription management
• Retrieve and review laboratory results, glucose monitoring data, pathology reports, and radiology reports
• Facilitate communication with patients between visits and adjust medications as appropriate
• Maintain independent outpatient clinics under faculty physician supervision
• Conduct evaluations and follow-up assessments for assigned patient populations
• Coordinate clinic-related patient management and documentation activities
Inpatient Endocrine Services
• Attend inpatient rounds under the direction of the Endocrine and/or Diabetes Attending on Service and Fellow(s)
• Perform inpatient consultations and follow-up visits as assigned by the Endocrine and/or Diabetes Attending on Service
• Provide follow-up care for hospitalized patients previously evaluated by department faculty physicians following surgery and admission
• Perform and document histories, physical assessments, and progress notes within required timeframes
• Order routine tests appropriate to the services provided
• Access biopsy, laboratory, pathology, and diagnostic reports to support care decisions
• Order medications and treatments within delegated prescriptive authority
• Perform admission procedures and maintain patient information in electronic systems
• Assess symptoms, toxicities, treatment effects, protocol compliance, and disease response
• Schedule and perform delegated medical procedures as required
Patient Triage, Consultation & Care Coordination
• Review, triage, and facilitate new patient medical acceptance through the Endocrine New Patient Access Center
• Support multidisciplinary evaluation of patients with endocrine tumors and endocrine effects from cancer care
• Assist faculty with peer-to-peer authorization requests for procedures and diagnostic testing
• Triage internal Endocrine, Diabetes, and Glycemic consultations and direct patient scheduling activities
• Attend urgent Endocrine Attending on Service clinics for new patients and consultations
• Attend IOTOX clinics for consultation and established patient management
• Participate in Thyroid Nodule Clinic activities as needed
• Attend Glycemic Urgent Clinics that provide same-day and urgent consultations for glycemic management
• Coordinate care with scheduling staff and interdisciplinary healthcare teams
Education, Research & Professional Collaboration
• Deliver education to patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, and care plans
• Conduct in-service education for clinic and nursing personnel regarding protocol requirements
• Serve as liaison among patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team members
• Participate in the education of APP students, house officers, medical students, and allied health personnel
• Collaborate with faculty physicians on clinical research protocol activities
• Screen patients for protocol eligibility and support follow-up study activities
• Demonstrate exceptional service, professionalism, teamwork, and communication skills
• Advocate for quality, safe, and cost-effective patient care
• Assist with departmental initiatives and special projects
• Serve as Team Leader for APPs after the first year in the position, as assigned

EDUCATION
Required: Master's Degree Nursing. or
Required: Doctorate Nursing Practice.
Degree may be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Master's Degree Accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred: Advanced Practice Provider experience in endocrine care, internal medicine, or primary care. Oncology experience is a plus. New graduates must have an oncology background or completed clinical rotations in an endocrinology clinic.
