What You Will DoReporting to the Chemistry (C) Division Leader, the Actinide Analytical Chemistry Group Leader will provide technical, operational, and performance leadership for a multidisciplinary workforce of technicians, technologists, scientists, engineers, and contractors. C-AAC delivers quality-assured analytical services and research and development supporting plutonium pit production and modernization, material recovery and recycle, nuclear forensics, and other national security missions. The group serves multiple sponsors through a broad portfolio of capabilities, including actinide assay, trace-element analysis, mass spectrometry, radiochemistry, X-ray fluorescence, interstitial and anion analysis, and surface characterization.
The Group Leader (GL), working with supporting Deputy Group Leaders, will lead the group's technical and programmatic activities, champion its personnel, sustain key analytical capabilities, and guide the development of new capabilities and research to meet evolving mission needs. A key responsibility will also be to lead and continually improve the group's quality management system to ensure reliable, defensible, and auditable analytical results in support of pit production and nuclear forensics. As an integral member of the division management team, the successful candidate will share responsibility for advancing the Chemistry Division's objectives and mission, including setting scientific and programmatic direction and ensuring sound management practices. The GL will strengthen the group through strategic planning, recruitment, and employee development, while ensuring effective performance in safety, security, environmental management, financial accountability, staffing and human resources, and facilities and operations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: - Demonstrated record of technical achievement in one or more areas relevant to C-AAC's mission, including analytical chemistry, actinide science, radiochemistry, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, or inorganic chemistry. Achievement may be demonstrated through publications and technical reports, presentations at national or international meetings, engagement with sponsors, participation in technical workshops, and/or leadership of major projects.
- Demonstrated technical and organizational leadership, including setting strategic direction and performance goals, making sound technical and operational decisions, managing personnel and resources, developing and mentoring employees, and fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, build consensus, collaborate effectively across organizational levels, motivate employees, resolve conflict, and address performance issues promptly and constructively.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate mission needs, identify and develop funding opportunities, establish productive sponsor relationships, and assemble effective teams across technical disciplines and organizational boundaries.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication, including the ability to clearly communicate complex technical, operational, and organizational matters through briefings, presentations, sponsor interactions, publications, and technical reports.
- Demonstrated experience providing operational oversight in safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, financial management, staffing, and facilities and operations.
- Ability to satisfy the requirements of DOE Order 426.2 for a management position in a Hazard Category 2 non-reactor nuclear facility.
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship.
Desired Qualifications: - Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working in a nuclear facility, including effective implementation of Conduct of Operations principles and expectations.
- Demonstrated experience leading a quality management system in a regulated analytical or nuclear environment, including quality assurance, document and records control, nonconformance management, corrective actions, assessments, performance monitoring, and continual improvement.
- Working knowledge of LANL policies and requirements related to integrated work management, safety, security, quality, environmental management, financial management, and human resources.
- Line-management or project/program-management experience, preferably involving multidisciplinary scientific, technical, and operational organizations.
- Experience managing work in facilities involving chemical and/or radiological hazards, nuclear materials, and limited or protected security areas.
- Thorough knowledge of DOE and NNSA mission needs related to plutonium pit production and modernization, threat reduction, nuclear-material safeguards, material recovery and recycling, and nuclear forensics.
- Demonstrated experience managing nuclear-materials workers and associated programs or designations, including FMH, ORS, ORM, and HRP, as applicable.
- Active DOE Q clearance.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience in Chemistry or a related technical field.
426.2a DOE Order Requirements:
Requires a Bachelor's degree and four years of nuclear experience. A qualifying degree may satisfy up to two of the four required years of nuclear experience on a one-for-one basis. Work Environment: Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
