The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is a research laboratory located in Berkeley, California, and is managed and operated by the University of California. LBNL conducts research in a variety of scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, materials science, energy, and environmental science. The laboratory was founded in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a Nobel laureate in physics, and is home to several Nobel laureates. LBNL is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and is one of 17 national laboratories overseen by the Department of Energy's Office of Science.
