The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation responsible for regulating and overseeing commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in the United States. The FMCSA's primary mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. The agency sets safety standards for CMVs and their drivers, enforces regulations, and provides education and outreach to the industry and the public. The FMCSA also maintains a database of safety information on motor carriers and drivers, and works with state partners to conduct safety audits and inspections. The agency is led by an Administrator who is appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.
