The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a non-profit organization based in Montgomery, Alabama that provides legal representation to prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes, poor prisoners without effective representation, and others who may have been denied a fair trial. The organization also works to challenge racial and economic injustice, and advocates for criminal justice reform. EJI was founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer and social justice activist, and has since become one of the leading organizations in the United States working on issues of racial and economic justice.
